I think the Adenium bug bite me!

I thought since my Ruffle Feather turned out to be what it was sold as........I ordered more from AdeniumRose. I took advantage of the free shipping and also changed my order of 5 full price Adeniums to an order of 3 at regular price and the other 5 are from the pack of 5 sale. There were 3 that I was going to order (the large one) that was available for the 5 pack, so I'm hoping I do get those 3 plus the other 2 chose.

The glue doesn't necessarily minimize scarring that I have seen, no. What the glue does is help seal the cut areas so that they do not loose too much moisture, shrivel up, and die back. The glue also can help prevent rot -if- you seal it while sterile and do not trap contaminants. Using glue can therefor make for much cleaner cuts that stay clean without nasty looking die back where parts have withered. But you'll still have the original scar that takes time to fade. You just may end up with less scaring if you are careful how you do it.

Yes, doing some grafting of your own later means you could make a new version with the same cultivar on a new root stock that could be much better looking. Then you could always sell or trade the less desirable grafted plant, or remove all of the limbs to put onto the new root stocks. But only if you want to!

In all cases, even cleft grafts, you can make them a lot cleaner in the first place by matching up the cambium layers very neatly and using grafts of the right size to match better. If you Google up grafting of plants in general, rather than being specific to adeniums, you will see MANY different techniques and how they are best applied for minimal scarring. Videos too. Generally speaking it doesn't matter of it's an adenium or an elm, or a hibiscus, or an Angel Trumpet because grafting works the same with them all more or less.

The only big variation is that succulents do not /require/ the cambium layers to be lined up. Hardened off woodier cuttings that are not succulents may require the cambium layers to be aligned for best results, that being the living tissue right beneath the outer bark layer. Adeniums appear to be more forgiving and don't care how you line up the grafts, but we do if we want less scarring.

They arrived yesterday and all got potted up (inside the home while DH was at work) on a very rainy day.....sorry the pics are not the best! Included was a free seedling:)

One came with different grafting.....Is this a good thing or will it always stand out?

All very nice, Jeannie. Sometimes my photo's come out sideways when taken w my iPad or iPhone when I post here.

The last photo of grafting. This is a "V" or cleft graft and they are definitely not as attractive. The union will fade somewhat, but will always be visible.

Nice! I agree with Rick though that I'd definitely not a fan of those cleft grafts. But once it gets growing well for you, you can try some grafting yourself and make a prettier one of the same variety later.

It sure makes a difference with a "good" cleft graft and a "poor" one. Hyn, I remember reading somewhere, sometime. Who knows, could have been years ago now. That someone shaved the union down to make it look more appealing. Not sure how this would go and I have never tried it. Don't do it Jeannie.

Thanks for all the responses........I'm kinda new to growing Adeniums and didn't notice any with the grafting like that. Luckily it was just one....could be why they offer the 5 pack special....maybe a way to get rid of not so pretty plants and/or ugly growing caudex.

No, I will not be trying to shave it down!

I would like to learn more about grafting thou. Maybe I will be able to re-graft it later on:)

You certainly can clean up a bad graft that way, Rick. With any kind of graft, but it can also leave surface scarring that will still take a while to fade away. There usually are various options to explore! I would not attempt to do anything for a while though. These will need time to settle in and grow well - and once they are, any clean up can be done later, one branch at a time and just one small section at a time. It's not difficult to do and there is information online. But as said, it is wise not to rush into it.

I hope they do very well for you Jeannie and when you feel like trying some grafting, or rooting of cuttings, there are plenty of people here to help you!

Couldn't you use super glue or Elmer's wood glue? I thought they were used to help minimize scarring.

I think Hyn's thought of doing some grafting of your own with this plant (cleft graft) in future is a great idea.

Mine are/where not as noticeable, but I found if I kept them shorter and fuller, the graft Union was less noticeable.
