Question about onions

I have a question about growing onions, specifically in N. Texas.

I live in Garland, and supposedly there used to be a lot of onion farming in this area in the past, so I know I should be able to grow some good ones.

I planted some onion sets very early this year (around late January) and they came up pretty quickly ( early Feb.) I planted some red, white, and yellow varieties. They grew fairly well up until mid June, and the tops started to topple over. I picked the onions, but many of them were not very big. Some had split into three smaller onions. The white varieties seemed to do the best, but still not the big bulbs I would expect. The red variety just produced small bulbs, about the size of a shallot. Any idea what might have been the problem? I suspect one factor might have been that I planted them pretty close together... Or could it be not enough water? Or soil quality?
