when do feijoa blossoms produce pollen?

I have some older feijoa (pineapple guava) bushes that get lots of blossoms but resist my efforts to hand pollinate them. I notice that I don't see any (or very little) pollen on the brush I use. I have another seedling feijoa that started blooming this year and when I hand pollinated it there was plenty of pollen available...and the result is lots of fruit developing now. I also have a Nametz feijoa that blooms but so far my hand pollination has not produced anything...I've seen pollen from a few flowers but not from most.

So what exactly is the sequence where (and when) these feijoa blooms will produce pollen. Is it in the first few days after they open, or does it take longer before there is actual pollen available. Are there any color clues that tell you when to expect pollen?

Has anyone figured this out? Please let me know if you have...

John
