Dining Room - Need Ideas

Going to be doing a major house reno and have some ideas for the dining room but looking to see what the houzz community can offer. Table, chairs and art stay. My style leans towards organic eclectic so all ideas are welcomed but most interested in ideas for chandelier and wall and ceiling treatments. Room is 13' x 16' . Ceiling is 9'. Table w/o chairs is 118"L x 51"W x 31"H There is no room for buffet or any other furniture as dining table take up space which was the trade off.

Floors are going to be wired brushed and stained darker

Beth- when you used the ECO paint did you paint the room yourself? My guess is though I'm sure our contractor uses a good painter I'm thinking the idea of a high gloss will freak him out so just want to be prepared to either find someone that won't freak out or assure him not an issue to use. I did see on their home page that there is a "certified" painter about 45 min away from us.

yes. you will need a well qualified painter. I actually used this paint on a mid century dresser that I redid and on an earlier desk I painted. If you want gloss, this is THE paint. Advance Glossy would be the next best thing and a bit cheaper! FPoE is about $100 or more a gallon.

here is the dresser I did and sold. hard to capture the gloss, but it's there. the pigments in their paints are so vibrant.

With a 9' ceiling, how high is your table? It looks like it might be a bit higher than 30". Also, the Dallas modern chandelier is not available at least at the moment. I found a couple more for you, but I think this will depend on wall color. A fuscia tone would give a great background to your art and furnishings as well. Due to the length of this table this wonderful shape could be interesting. It is 44" long. The other one I see with the glossy blue walls. At nite it would look like stars! That round one comes in a dark metal too.

flo, what about the blingy one,,,like the Abbey one? (lamps plus has a knock off brand that;s similar. i know because I got it!)

and Flo,,,what do you think about some mirrors in the room since it's so dark?

Table is 31" H. The other day when I was looking, I did see the Dallas wasn't available on some sites but did find it on a few others (now if I can remember where) but am still open to other suggestions as probably with my luck it will be not available when I go to order.

Also just came across this one- back to the beads... 44" W

Beth, not enough floor space to add mirrors. Trade off on purchasing this house was a small dining room with a BIG table.

I just remembered a chandelier that was contemporary that was a bunch of round globes that were all gathered together in a bunch - looks like a bunch of balloons upside down. I'm going to see if I can find it.

Here is a sketch with the blingy one.

ted, i meant on the wall. like the pic. not a floor mirror.

i like the blingy one. in the gold too. goes well w/the woven in the chairs and will look snazzy w/the dark blue, if you do that color

Mirrors are great but I am not sure where one would work in this room. My problem with the tear drop chandys, up close they look cheap. And you can't see thru them. Just trying to get a feel for the options Ted likes. Wall treatment first in this case.

deco- when we first moved in I thought why would anyone paint their dining room pink! But it has grown on me and I would stay in the pink tones but can't convince hubby on that one. Pink is lovely on the skin color under candle light.

    - no the dilemma isn't totally solved as we are still talking it out. Plus I've added the Powder Rm as a dilemma on this post to keep it all together.

Is your powder room near your dining room? If so, I would consider, especially is you like either dark blue or fuchsia tone, do the powder room in the same color but perhaps one shade darker with metallic tones similar to dining room. After all, guests will be mainly in these two spaces for a sit down dinner. Your porcupine mirror might not be best for this bath? You could do the walls and fixtures in black with gold or silver accents. Just depends on your style preferences.

hey Flo! i have that chandy, kind of, and up close it's beautiful! IMO lol gives off good light though. (i'm changing my leopard print shortly)

Beth, I know where you are going with the mirror on the wall as I have thought about this. There is a bare wall at the other end of the table but I haven't put anything on it (yet) as we use that aisle as a walkway from our back hall to our stairs that go down and I'm afraid of bumping it if I put anything on the wall. If I would it will be one of the pieces of art that I have in storage.

Flo- agree with you regarding tear drops..

Ok- so do I want to think grass cloth wall paper and beaded type chandelier??

Beth- you proved us wrong on the tear drop..

good think I just cleaned it too! hah.

what if you did a different pink tone in the glossy? more of an opal blush? Opulent opal maybe?

Then in the adjoining bathroom, you could do a darker opal w/the gold metallic sheen over it. look at the middle pink one (BTW, they have this in Sapphire as well!)

Flo- our style leans towards organic and lots of texture. That is why I'm drawn to the porcupine mirror.

Powder bath but you have to coordinate with your dining room and entry.

I like the beaded option, a lot, as well. that blue agate one I posted is a few grand though.

flo, that glossy black is stunning. I need to do my walls around my computer like that.

Beth, how about in your master WC? Haha. And you thought you were done with the master bath! I love some of the beaded ones but you have to see them in person, or be able to return without penalty. Tedbixby, have you considered some barn wood in powder bath with the porcupine mirror?

Well ladies thanks for helping me tonight. I'm headed to bed. You've given me a lot to dream about. I think I'll start out by seeing if I can find that Dallas chandelier in the vintage gold tomorrow and go from there. And I hear you Flo regarding the beaded and it lasting me. But if I love it, it will be a none issue or if it is inexpensive I can replace it down the road and not feel guilty. I think anything over $2K I better love it -lol. Nite...

Organic is about neutral colors and natural elements. It is casual and comfortable. Try a neutral gray green on the walls and a sisal or jute rug to ground your table and chairs. Since you table and chairs are the focal point in the room, try an oversized casual hanging light over it. A table runner is a nice way to break up the table top and you can accent it with plants, baskets and other eclectic organic elements. Try neutral blinds on the window instead of drapes. It is less formal. Wall art should be reflective of natural elements to complete you look. Good luck with your remodel!

Last night when I went to bed I was pretty convinced that the dining room was going to be high gloss navy walls with the Dallas chandelier. But when I woke up this AM I was "unsettled" about it and thought that I needed to really figure out why. I've come to the conclusion and solarsue45 has confirmed it, that even though I like the navy/ Dallas as it is something I haven't done before but when it comes down to it, it is slick (for lack of a better term) than the organic feel that hubby and I really like. I think as I put the design of the house together I'm going to find that if I were to go forth with the navy/Dallas that it will not flow with the rest of the house. So that said, I'm going to go refocus on the "organic" for this room. Starting back with the chandelier.

I think I'm drawn to the beaded ones because I've already done iron with this table in another house and want something different but will keep an open mind. If one that I love shows up, I'll go that way.

I still would like to explore options for wall treatments rather than just plain paint and would love to hear from you on that.

I really appreciate everyone's help and I do hope you will continue to offer suggestions as our discussion yesterday really helped me figure out the way I need to go and I don't feel "unsettled" about this decision now :)

What a difference a few hours' sleep makes! How do you feel about grasscloth?

I'm open to the idea of grass cloth. Any suggestions?

I really like almost everything in this room, but can't get past the matching frame and mats on that beautiful picture. Maybe consider a white or off-white mat with a more neutral wood frame? The art would have a lot more impact!
Maybe one of the pros could photoshop something better...
I am not a pro, but think grasscloth would be beautiful!

    Meant to add the art.

hamfast- I know from afar and poor photo quality it's hard to see but the frame and mat are part of the painting as the artist paints both these to incorporate with the painting so they aren't just a mat and frame. Fran Larson is the artist and she is well known for doing this to all of her paintings when she went to this style.

Looks like grass cloth may be something I need to look into :)

    Boy am I embarrassed!
Time for me get educated on this unusual artist and her work!

Hamfast- please don't be embarrassed. I appreciate your honesty and I'm sure others were thinking the same. Fran is originally from MI and most of her paintings when she lived in MI were of the beach. Those were framed with white mats and natural wood frames. When she moved to NM, many many yrs ago, her work evolved into what you see on my wall. I have quite a few of her paintings and I've passed on a few of them that even though I liked the painting I didn't like the color combination of the frame and mat. So see, no reason to feel embarrassed.

Here's a closer view of the frame and mat

I would opt for a chandelier with shell or glass as proposed above with ivory linen drapery panels to keep it light.

tedbixby,,beautiful frame in that picture. love the colors in both pieces. I think grasscloth in this room, w/those art pieces, are a mismatch. Maybe I'd have to see the specific grass, but I just don't like them together. I just see more of a color or something w/a bit more drama. just my opinion. maybe i'm out in left field!

I'm going to go look at grass cloth tomorrow and determine if it is even an option. The other thought is that there is a local woman who does amazing faux wall treatments. I'm wondering if I had her paint a grass cloth and then do something with it to take it to the next level?? I have no clue what that would be but with your painting expertise maybe you can think of something? And no you are not out in left field. Keep your ideas coming as I know something will click.

I really like an organic look for my home too. There are some beautiful greens in both of your art pieces that might look nice for your wall color. I think green would be beautiful with the color of your furniture too. I would get some large pieces of poster board and prime and paint them with some of the greens and neutrals from the paintings to see what looks best.

That said, the other color that stands out to me from your art is the cobalt blue. I know you're thinking that may not be what you want as you continue process through what you want, but the right color of blue could still be considered more of an organic element if it's more of a sky color. I'm think the color of the sky at dusk that might have a little pink hue to it. Again, a good way to test things is with large swatches of sample paint.

Beth, Ted was diagnosed with aggressive cancer a few months ago as he reported on another thread. Treatment was progressing well and completed around 3 weeks ago. Then the last post was several weeks ago where he was in the hospital and had lost use of one of his arms and testing was ongoing. That’s our last communique that I am aware of. All who have appreciated Tedbixby over the years here on Houzz have been praying and sending positive messages to all involved. We continue those to this moment and beyond.
