Kitchen lighting

last modified: 9 years ago

Hi! I'm looking to update the lighting in my kitchen and found these two on pottery barn I really like. I currently have a fixture over my table and one over my island that were there when I bought my house last year. I'm looking for something more my style and not silver. I like industrial looks but also farmhouse styles (think Joanna Gaines). Wanted to get your thoughts on whether these two would go well together... the glass one would be for over the island and the other for over kitchen table. I appreciate your help!

Looks fine, just be sure the chandelier is large enough for the dining table.

Also, check the canopy on the site to make sure the hardware adapts to sloped ceiling.

Thank you for your feedback Porter! The description and specifications do not comment on whether they are adaptable to sloped ceilings.... what should I look for?

The three light chandelier seems too small for over your dining table.

It would be something as such. They can be purchased on line, but often times you need to paint them to match the chain, etc which isn't a problem. I'd call customer service and ask them about the light and if it is, "sloped ceiling adaptable".

If they say, "yes" get the name of the person you spoke to and the date and time you called and asked so if it's not right you get free return shipment unless you have a store close you can walk it in..... I'd just cover your bases by keeping that info :)

Again, you can get a canopy if it's not.

As Bev mentions again you didn't answer about the chandelier... it does look a tad too small for the table... is there one size larger or other sizes?

There is a much larger version of the chandelier but it is an additional 200.... but I think you are both right. It's a 6 foot table and the three light chandelier is 15.5" in width.

Can I get your opinion on going with dark bronze fixtures? Granite is black.", hardware is nickel. Too much?

Glass is a good option for the island IMO if you want to go with bronze or similar. You have been ok with the small light over the island? How big is the island? What is your budget max with for the chandelier over the dining table?

The table is 6 foot long and how wide?

Brushed nickel would also be a great option for both spaces... I'd keep the chandelier spare (such as you posted, but larger or what Bev posted) more spindly vs super heavy iron if you want to go darker toned metal.

Just some very reasonable option for over the table... I would not go less in diameter than 28" or it will be way too small.... 30ish or so good....

Another think you need to factor in is the height of the ceiling when getting a taller chandelier so you have enough ceiling height to manage the length of a chandelier the style you posted in the size you need. You would want the chandelier about 36" above your table top from the bottom of the chandelier unless your table is very narrow.

So the island is a weird shape but it is 5 feet wide. I like the one light over it which is why I selected the glass pottery barn pendant. It is a very large pendant so I think I'll still go with that assuming it can go on a slanted ceiling.

i really like the dark bronze and black fixtures but was concerned that since I have nickel hardware on cabinets it would be too different.

As for the kitchen table- it is 6 feet long and three feet wide. The height of the ceiling where both would be hung is 10 feet. The ceiling at its highest point is probably 11 1/2 feet.

I really like the wayfair chand yoy added (the last image). It's very much like the original one I posted but larger (and cheaper than the large PB version). I just need to look and make sure that it would be able to be mounted to a sloped ceiling. Thank you for your help. You're terrific!!

You like the Big Sky from Wayfair?

I didn't notice the ceiling be slanted over the dining table...Given you have a down rod there I only resumed, but it was obviously adaptable to a slanted ceiling if it is slanted :)

Another thing is that it should be about a foot less than the width of the table at it's widest point. (In many cases these measurements will be the same). One of the main reasons for this is so that people don't bump their heads on it when getting up from their seats.

***If this just isn't possible it's better to go bigger with the dining room chandelier size than smaller. You can always hang it a bit higher so that no one hits their head getting up. I prefer a bit larger than a bit too small. Typically, you'd hang it 36" above, but given your ceiling is tall and the light is larger you can, "break the rule" so to speak and go a bit higher. Nothing more awful than a chandelier too small for a table.

Another guideline to try to adhere to is that the chandelier's length should not allow it to be closer than four feet from any wall. Really it shouldn't be closer than 48 inches to any piece of furniture such as a cabinet or sideboard. This doesn't seem to hold true in your case as it's in an open area.

The six light in the same chandelier is 27" in diameter.... look at the photos ppl posted of it and read the reviews please... There are two tables similar in size and they have it hanging WAY too high, but it looks nice in size!! You could properly hang this at 36" or so above the surface of your table to the bottom of the chandelier or the larger higher. If the space of your home is smaller beyond the photos I'd go with the 27" in diameter and hang it a bit lower... just look at chain length and make sure there is enough for your ceiling height! NOTHING worse than too high with this size for sure!

Oh, sorry... your backsplash appears darker in color, the dining chairs are dark, the table top too.... so it appears on my monitor as are the counters. Nothing wrong with mixing metals.. they just need to work within the room.

If you feel more safe with a brushed nickel, should not be hard... I don't see an issue though. it's not super heavy iron with frosted glass shades and so on... :)

    Liz,

I just wanted you to be aware of the fact it's a sloped ceiling. Most typically a canopy w/ a loop chain link mount works as the loop would allow the entire assembly to hang perpendicular to the floor. You just need to know you have enough chain and wire for the distance so it's not hanging really high which is bad.

I don't want to be over cautious here, but want you to be aware is all so I don't get you in to a situation that it won't work.

The finish on fixtures should be dark to anchor their appearance.

Thank you Porter- I called Pottery Barn store near me and the associate said it could be mounted on a slopes ceiling but I'm concerned bc it doesn't look the same as what you attached a photo of... I'm going to research what you mean by canopy and loop chain.

Given a loop chain it will fall properly vs a rod would not unless you had one specifically for a slope.... I'm sure you can return it to the store with no problem if you hold it up and it doesn't right itself, but I think it will given it's a chain.... you just need enough chain and wire for the ceiling height is all... nice thing being you can take it back to the store vs. shipping it back if it doesn't work. I think it will though.

I'm off for a LOOOONg day....

Tell me your thoughts after research or what chandelier you choose.... have a nice day.

So I ended up going with this for over the kitchen table... it'll be delivered Saturday so anxious to see in person. Hopefully it looks good in person! I really liked the other from wayfair but was not pleased with the reviews as many reviewers said it looked cheap.

The glass pendant light from pottery barn for over my island came. It's beautiful. It's very large and I really think it'll look great over the island. Once they are up I'll be sure to let u know and will post a photo. I really appreciate your help.

Do you have a height recommendation for the light over the island? Does the same distance apply as for dining tables?

Hope you've had had a nice day. Again, I really appreciate your guidance and suggestions.

    Liz

You picked a great Chandelier Liz.... It's a tiny bit less busy which I like.

Typically, yes you would want your pendant to be about 36" above your island. You say, "it's very large" so being a bit large and your ceiling high no worry. You can go a bit higher. Main thing is if it's a work space and it's too low you don't want people bending over and hitting their head on it :)

I'd be interested to know how high your existing light is from the counter to the bottom of the pendant. It's high, but you might meet in the middle between the usual 36" or so and what you have hanging.

Rules are meant to be broken.... you have a high ceiling and a single larger light for over a smaller island so it can certainly be more than 36"... yet, too high always looks bad. I typically would tell people if they can't get a visual to blow up a balloon and put it on a string and tape it to the ceiling in the diameter as close as they can to the light to see how it looks visually.... understand you ceiling is very tall so?

If old pendant is still up the distance (requested above) would be a guide.

Good morning! Just measured the current light above my island. It is 43.5 inches from the bottom of the pendant to the island counter. Since moving into our home, it's always felt too high but I never looked into what the height should be. The island is somewhat wide so I don't think I have to worry about anyone hitting their head. I've attached a better picture of the island.

    Hi Liz,

    I believe 36" is a good spot.

I just looked back at the picture of your whole kitchen. You don't have a protruding range hood or other things like that and your light is clear glass. If it was a large metal dome light I'd look at the range hood other things in a room and adjust the light so it was visually pleasing to other things built in around the kitchen. I think the main thing with the light is to make sure it doesn't shine in your eyes or your husbands eyes. So, if you or your husband say are 6'4" tall, it could be very bright.

Looking at the light if it's the Flynn light it is 24" tall so a lot taller vertically than the one you currently have. It's also a 100 watt bulb.

If you look up at Bev's photo she placed the lights she mocked up at a visually pleasing level with the cabinets and room. Again, your light is clear glass so not a visual obstruction and it's a tall piece vertically.

You want the pendant low enough to keep the glare of a light bulb from being a problem, but high enough so that the pendant doesn't act as a barrier. No room and no fixture will have the same sweet spot. I think 36" (most will do 32" to 36" depending on the fixture) however, you can go a tad higher due to the vertical height of the light.

If you could, I'd have one person on the ladder, one person at the island with a metal measure tape and one standing back (you) to see how it looks best. If you can do this I'd try 34" 36" and 38".

It's kind of like when you put on a dress/skirt and something about it seems off like it makes you look like your legs are short or... Then you tuck the hem under a couple of inches and it looks great and just by hemming it only 2" it makes the dress/skirt on you more in proportion. I kind of see that with a light like this. Finding the sweet spot. Perhaps a silly analogy?

36" seems good to me it's only about 7" lower than the light you currently have and the light you have doesn't occupy a lot of space as the new light will however, it's clear so not a lot of visual obstruction going on. It's finding that sweet spot... might need to be a pinch higher. For the most part, keep in mind the 100 Watt bulb and how that will impact people standing in front of the island. I think you will love this light and it will really make the kitchen very pretty!

All in all, this photo shows lighting similar and what I was speaking about is the backdrop being the kitchen and it's cupboards, etc. They placed the light(s) at a good height in proportion to what is behind them. For example none of the first two on the left aren't below the range hood nor the cupboard.

    How's that for a long story :)

Thank you so much for your insight! I will definitely make sure we have an extra set of hands so I can stand back and try the different heights. I really hadn't thought about how the height needs to work with the cabinets and all. Your analogy is perfect and makes total sense. I'm hoping my inlaws will be over this weekend so that we can get it hung. Pictures to follow!! Thanks again!! You have been a lifesaver.

No problem.... Please post and also, let me know about the chandelier when you get it. So happy you read REVIEWS!

We were able to get one up today... probably won't be able to get the glass one for over the island until next weekend when my father in law is in town. But here is the one. I love it!! It's 36" above the table

Yes, very pleased with the quality! I'm so happy with it. It's exactly the look I was hoping for without really knowing exactly what I wanted. Thank you for your guidance! I'll let you know when the glass PB light is up. Can't wait :)

You are very welcome! So happy for you, it looks so great... yes, wait until you can get the help to get the island light at the right height so you can stand back and access the kitchen when it's being put up.

You should be very pleased and getting things on line as such....... I'm happy it worked out perfectly! Post when you get the light up over the island and enjoy your new beautiful dining space Liz!

Both lights are finally up. Loving them!

House all decorated for my daughter's baptism :)

Oh, that is so sweet. Nicely decorated for the baptism!!!!

Liz, are you happy with it all???????!!!

I think it looks absolutely wonderful!

    What a difference.....

Ok, so I'm scrutinizing now.... how high is the pendant over the island. Surely if you took it from a different direction it would could look completely different. Don't want to toss cold water on a lovely lighting and it is...... It just looks a pinch too high from this angle after staring and that's what I do:)

However, if you are happy that is all that matters and I wanted to say:

    Congratulations on the baptism!

We went with 36 after testing a few different lengths. I guess it could come down a bit but that's going to take some convincing of my husband. I really am pleased with the pendant itself though and how both fixtures have changed the kitchen.
