I was taken with this bedroom because it has the same shape headboard which I think you can keep and it will work!

The nightstands match but seem to be somewhat antique/traditonal/victorian and would probably be found second hand.

The lights are hanging but any modern light would give you the tension in the design in the room.

The wallpapered wall adds movement and a subtle bit of color and all the bedding and wall colors and carpet would be drawn from the papered wall.

All in all a very soothing low key bedroom that has a luxe feel with the fabric headboard and the smooth bedding, velvet pillows, and woven textured throw on foot of bed.

Can the bed go on the wall that your cute baby is looking at? That seems to be the longest uninterrupted wall in the room and would be the easiest wall to paper, stencil, etc.

I think adding brighter accent color in your bedroom would be helpful. Do you have any favorite color or any color in mind? From your sample picture it seems that you like white, gray, dust pink, and orange. Adding accesories, bedding or painting your existing furniture with any of that colors may help to infuse the room with your personality. Chalkpainting is one easy choice for DIY furniture painting for a novice painter; it is non-toxic, lead free, odor free and low VOC.

You need to choose color scheme first before investing on new accesories and painting though. Finding a rug, patterned cushion or wall painting as an anchor or color inspiration for the whole room may be a good starting point.

Thanks for all the input! I really appreciate your time. I don't have a set budget but I'm ready to spend some money as well as hunt for second-hand things that I can make my own. (It has looked like this for four years so it's time.) We didn't choose any of this except the headboard--so it doesn't reflect our taste and won't be staying--I may paint the chest of drawers but may replace it with a long dresser instead. The suggestions are really helpful as well as the linked articles. Thanks again.

Re-reading, I have a few questions:

(1) The bed is facing the wall with the entry door. When we looked at the house the previous owner had it on opposite wall-- the wall that now has mirrors lying against it. I thought it should be on the other wall to create a focal point as you walk into the room. Should it be moved? There would be recessed lights above the bed if we put it where it originally was. (I love the view out the windows. It is my favorite thing about the room, so I really don't want to put the bed under the windows.)

(2) Would crown molding be a good idea in here? I would have the get the not-real-wood stuff.

(3) Should I paint the wood doors the same color as the trim?

(4) I would like to take out the fan and put in a light fixture. Is this hard to do?

(5) We want color but are stuck. A designer a few years ago suggested Nile Blue and we just couldn't take the leap. Any suggestions for a wall color that would not be too dark and would look good with the headboard? I know I would have to fine tune it for undertones but a ballpark?

I take it that you love your bed, and I do too. Now, you need to add nightstands that are in scale with the bed....bigger. I would try the bed against the wall with the mirrors and add nightstands and lamps. New nightstands should be at least as tall as the top of your mattress. Then, I suggest two handsome chest of drawers on the wall where the headboard is now. The room and the bed scale call for more substantial furniture pieces. Then, with some drapery and bedding with color and pattern you will have a room that is pleasant and comfy. Do you need to paint, or are you just considering paint because you want some color?

Thanks! The paint that is there now has a pink-orange undertone that I do not like, and the walls do need paint. I will get samples of BM Quiet Moments and Silver Lake. I'm intrigued by the idea of painting the ceiling a color--would this go with neutral walls or a color on the walls? Thank you. Everyone seems to agree that the bed should go where the mirrors are. Can anyone explain why? I would like to know. Thank you!

Is the wall with the mirrors the entry door wall? If so, I would leave the bed where it is. It's bad feng shui to have your bed facing away from the door. I think the reason for it is because you would have open wall space on either side for night stands and lamps. The door to the left of the bed feels a little intrusive. If you painted the doors the same color as the walls, it would help them blend in.

Kate, the reason the bed should go on the other wall is to have it fit the space in stead of looking squeezed in and awkward with appropriately sized nightstands. You have a nice sized room and placing furniture to take advantage of it will result in a pleasing appearance and a comfortable retreat. An option for your ceiling is to paint it a few shades lighter or darker than the wall color you choose.

I don't disagree Vistas. I was speaking from a Feng Shui perspective. But sometimes you have to work within the confines of a room's layout and do what looks best from a design perspective.
