Closed terrarium exploded

Had a large demijohn terrarium that was closed for a few months with a rubber stopper....one day I noticed the plants starting to wilt so I took off the stopper....in that moment most of the contents flew out and splatter all over my wall....the house then smelled like rotten eggs....where did I go wrong?
