I wonder if the velvet chairs are baby and toddler proof ....and also love the last ..more traditional rug for your table and kids...smaller patterns and darker colors are soooo much easier to keep clean and elegant and timeless as well...some of the animal prints have these same qualities as well

How do I get my hands on that design software that a few of you used to add the chair and carpets to my original photos? Need to get my hands on that stat!

If you do a rug in these colors, I wouldn't do the gold chairs.

I love what you have done so far!! Re:kids, I have to second the other comments: where do you eat? If here, get a cool, busy, CHEAP rug. Throw it out in 5 years. Buy a fabulous wool rug when you have school-aged kids :) it also looks good rugless.

I have learned in the last few years that quality rugs are a good choice in all situations...(especially in open floor plans where they are not tucked away unseen except for dinner time)...they clean up easier..don't curl at the corners ...the pile doesn't flatten out from traffic or spot cleaning..and in your case they live up to the quality level of your home...plus in my case it takes forever to find the perfect rug..not something I would want to do again in a few years...

I agree ritasj, but have you ever gotten ants in a rug because it was daily spattered with syrup-soaked waffles? I have! meal time is supposed to be fun. The last thing you want is to be yelling at your kids while they are learning how to eat with the family. I do find that my high-quality replacement rug takes a beating and cleans up great, but I am so glad it didn't have to live through the early years!!

Saw where someone posted the leopard rug from Ballard. I would advise not to buy it. Someone I know got it and sent it back immediately. Very thin, cheap looking in person.

What about the chairs in the green color? That would look nice and would look great with a leopard rug

The blue and pink rug is beautiful but doesn't work with the chairs that you have , either get a different set or a different rug , the table seems too heavy for the lightness of the chairs it could be painted lighter if you can . I 'my not very fond of glass top tables but if you can visualize one plus your chairs and that blue and pink rug , they will look fresh, light and elegant all at the same time.

We have a few Flor tile rugs throughout our home. They have fun prints and are easy to clean with kids and pets. I take the soiled carpet square outside hose it off, let it dry and then return it. I've done this a number of times and the pile on the tiles holds up nicely. You can always buy a few extra tiles as insurance. Happy decorating!

More great ideas, thank you everyone! @genevieve: The gold chairs are here to stay. I liked the idea of playing with dark (the table) and light (the chairs), wood and metal. I think the rug will need to be on the lighter side (but probably with some sort of busy pattern because with 2 kids under two, I can't deal with always having to worry). Actually, I did have a beautiful glass top table that we put in our basement because a safety consultant said it was dangerous. So we got this oval table (bonus: no sharp corners!). I like the idea of Flor tile rugs @eringraves. Will look into it! @Tammy: I do love the chair in green (also hides stains probably better than the yellow) -- will give it some thought. Any ideas on rugs with those color chairs?

I think it is becoming more obvious from all this discussion that the right rug is not going to fix this dilemma...the table is the thing that is sort of discordant in the room...if the chairs all matched that would take the onus off the rug having to unify the unrelated parts...if the table wasn't so solid and chunky the chairs would mix better...Then you add the need for a busy rug to avoid spots showing...I can see why you are stumped...anything can be worked out if you love all the parts enough...but I think something has to give here

Also forgot the most limiting element here...trying to base your choice on color...this really limits your choices

If this is your regular eating space, I would vote for no rug until your kids are much older. It looks great the way it is and it will be a pain to vacuum after every meal. I'm speaking as a mom of 3 (ages 8, 11 and 13).

No rug may be a good option also...

I think the green chairs would look amazing, rug or no rug, you were so right to get rid of the glass table for fingerprints alone much less safety hazard, and the flor tiles are a great idea, also what about an over dyed patchwork rug? They are really reasonable, but they have no pile. Good dense wool pile practically repels spills, but if you're going the abuse and discard route it might be an option.

I like the idea of the rug, just because it sets off the space, but yes, I agree that something's gotta give. It's really tough decorating when you have little ones, because you ALWAYS need to take that into consideration and it will limit you. I'm not 100% sold on the table. I thought it would be cool to mix traditional and modern, etc., but maybe it's just too dark. Hmmm...the confusion continues. Ha!

Just looking at those gold wire chairs hurts my butt! Get a nice solid outdoor fabric and put cushions in them to work with the velvet chairs. You can keep them clean, it adds the color and softness of fabric and eliminates the need for a rug which I think will be overpowered by that heavy table anyway. Otherwise, I like what's going on here.

Might be worth it to have some custom made. Look for seamstresses or upholsters in your area to help with that.

which element to you want to keep the most?...chunky table?...metal chairs?...velvet chairs.?...rug?

Once that is established it will be easier to try to achieve some synchronicity..

Personally, l agree with you...a rug would add a lot here...not one that goes outside to be hosed off...but something nice and durable...

@ritasj: For now we mostly eat at the kitchen counter and bar stools, because our little ones are in high chairs and they have super early mealtimes and bedtimes so we don't eat a ton around the dinner table. But eventually, it's where we will be. Maybe they will be less messy by that point. We also put down a food tarp when we do eat at the kitchen table so that helps catch crumbs and spills. I think this is a great choice...pile not too deep...wool is always best for wear and tear with children...
colors and pattern perfect for hiding stains...even tho with such a tight weave ....penetration will be slow enough to clean as needed after a big spill...with the added plus of the mid-range price...

the velvet chairs and the table could work with this ...sort of think the wire ones will look sort of insubstantial here...but there are a few things you could try...single cushions that cover seat and back of wire chairs...maybe tufted washable velvet...to add weight to the appearance...

and if this doesn't freak you out ...spray painting the wire chairs would help as well...preserving the wire image but making them more cohesive with the other elements thru color...maybe navy or yellow depending on how eclectic you want it to look...

None of these improvements will be wasted if you decide to look for a less chunky table in the end

Neely, I like the cb2 rug, but you're gonna need larger than 6 x 9. Should be 4' longer and 4' wider than the table.
