Nice kitchen! Cabinet hardware and pendant lights would be great additions.

Personally I don't like "décor" in a kitchen. It always needs to be moved if you actually cook. I would add some pulls to doors and drawers and use colored placemats

I like decor that also has utilitarian use... so a fun aqua toaster or a hot red one... perhaps put some color pendants and some art... just add color, you have a good foundation.

I would paint the wall below the chair rail a different color or add some more molding to the lower part of the wall. I would put art on the wall too. I would also add a valance to the kitchen window. The pictures below are 2 different styles you could use, I would not use these colors in your space.

I like your lovely kitchen, it is like the perfect "little black dress" that is awaiting jewelry. Cabinet pulls, the pendant lights you desire, and a snazzy Roman shade for the window. (Don't worry about covering up the half-round top window.) Your pendants and shade should add the "color snap" this kitchen needs.

What color pulls do you suggest

Please do not add a valance over the window. The arched window is a cool architectural feature. Don't cover it up.

The room is bland because it's 50 shades of tan.

Liven it up by swapping out the tan bar stools with stools in a bright color, say lime green or red or aqua. Then use that same color in a few smaller pops around the room. For example, in a tea kettle or blender or utensil holder or other things you normally keep out in your kitchen.

You've got room on top of the cabinets to add some colorful pottery or art pieces. Agree on adding pops of color with tea kettle, towels, etc.

You could also do one fixture with multiple lights.

Add furniture and colorful artwork to the dining area next to the kitchen. For the love of 2017, no valance! Add pulls to your cabinets and pendants over the island. Love your island chairs. Bright chairs would look odd in your space.

I know pot rack are out, but I love them. So convenient and functional . When your cooking the pots and lids are handy. They do make pot racks with lights to go over islands.

Please also don't add anything to the top of the cabinets. It will only add clutter and make the room look darker and more closed in than it already is. It will also detract from the window which is the focal point of the room.

If they are not already in place, definitely add under-cabinet lighting in a warmish temperature, say 2700K.

I agree, you need a bit of color.

I wouldn't suggest putting the color in your pendants, as you'd be stuck with it if you decide to change colors.

I always say, put the color in your accessories, curtains, and accent pieces that aren't too expensive to swap out in the future if you want to change it up.

With that said, I agree with the advice offered from other about the valance. DO NOT DO THAT.

However, a modern day solution to give it a finished look, is a an awning in tight tuxedo look. Put color in that, and pick it up, with contrasting and complimentary fabrics on your counter stools.

Also, I am not sure exactly what is going on to the right of the kitchen, if you enter the space that way, or if it's the dining room, but just added something to fill the space.

this isnt a great photo but a view of whats on the right side of the island. Im going to decorate that later but it will serve as a dining area.

Gotcha. Dining room it is. Negate what I suggested for that area, but do consider putting in color, texture,& patterns that compliment your paint color, and flooring.

It's boring because you have no color in there. Add canisters in a bright-colored ceramic. Get colorful potholders and a bright Kitchenaid mixer. Add bright rugs to cushion your feet as you prepare meals. Add art. Easy!

The light is quite harsh. Under-cabinet lighting would help. LED rope lighting on cabinet tops would eliminate the ceiling gloom.

I large piece of art (no smaller than a yard square) above the chair rail would definitely help.

Okay. Now that I'm properly chastened about adding a few select pottery/art pieces on top of the cabinets... ;-) I guess the more updated look is to extend the cabinets all the way up to the ceiling with boxes that can house the same thing so that they have that taller look and go all the way up to the ceiling. They can be open or enclosed with glass doors. Here's a couple of photos that illustrate this.

Once you are done with all of the suggestions, if you feel that you need something over the cabinets and don't want to extend them, then put 1 or 3 pieces of pottery in the corner at the top of the upper cabinet only.

You have a very nice kitchen! I would use vintage brass hardware/pulls to add more drama but keep it elegant. Add sconces with similar hardware color above the window.

What style of dining area will you have next to the kitchen? If it would have a bigger light fixture, you might want to choose simpler pendant lights for the island, so the two areas' fixture won't compete with each other.

A more subtle way would be to add color to the walls above the counters and cabinets...perhaps a paler aqua or mint..so far your choices are timeless and good for re-sale but lack personality...or add a shade of your favorite color to make it more inviting and personal...this allows you to choose other accessories in softer colors that are more relaxing and appealing in an open floor plan..I also find using really nice rugs in the kitchen is also effective in open floor plans such as yours...kitchen rugs are usually more limited to function than style...nice rugs enhance the quality and appreciation of the space from all angles in your home

Add pendants with bling!!

I live in a very rural setting, in my house those "bling" pendants would soon be spider condos. Make sure you choose lights that are EASY to clean, especially if you are over 40 and don't like cleaning things where you'll need a ladder to do so.

Pendants would help as would brushed nickel hardware. You want something with enough weight and length to show up against your cabinets.

Adding pendant lights, hardware to your cabinets, and a few choice decor items to your kitchen will help. Here are some ideas from our designs.
