Of course you did not find any seeds ;) I ordered a tree from Harris and should be here next week (shipped monday). I hope this is a fruiting tree as I ordered the bigger one available. Silica Is there a big difference between the one in container and in the ground? Why did you choose to do so?

I bought some Dekopons (from CA) last winter and they were fantastic. It's actually a hybrid of a Ponkan mandarin that was crossed with a 'Kiyomi' Tangor (mandarin x sweet orange). So it is 3/4 mandarin and 1/4 sweet orange. But the flavor in a perfectly raised and ripened fruit is second to none in my opinion. Way better than the horrible navel oranges we get in the stores out here. There are so many awesome citrus varieties.

Susanne, I did not find any seeds in the fruit and definitely the fruit was "cured " before they sold it, because fruit was not firm to the touch, felt little soft when squeezed by hand. Dave, is it true that the larger the navel on an orange, the sweeter it tastes?

sunshine, all Dekopons are cured for 20 to 40 days at a somewhat elevated temperature. This is to lower the acid content of the fruit, and raise the sugar content making the fruit taste much sweeter. The actual name of the fruit is Shiranuhi, and can only be legally called by the legal title of Dekopon after the sugar level reaches 13 brix and a low acid content of 1 percent or lower. Actually in Japan the fruit has quite a few different names depending on which prefecture it is grown in.

What does this mean to be cured? After harvesting the fruit is stored in a warm place??? Or the whole tree put in a warmer spot?

Yes, after harvesting the fruit is stored in the controlled temperature environment for more than 20 days.

I just got the tree not long ago from floraexotica so I can not take credit about how it looks. I grow it in pro mix hp (high porosity) and fertilize with dyna gro. I have to confess that I get carry away this year and add a few plants to my collection. Hopefully, they gonna like my set up in winter. I plan to put some of my citrus in a grow tent with led grow light.

Hi Brian,

the tag attached to my tree show the generic name of dekopon which is shiranui. I am not sure if Perry (floraexotica) update his website frequently or not. He lives not far away from me so I just go visit him from time to time. This year, I was quite impressed by all the citrus varieties he has. Some dekopon, Sugar belle, finger limes, etc. When I was there I saw 3 dekopon but I am not sure if they are still available or not. You can call him if you are interested. It is the best way to contact him (never have luckby email).

Ironically, according to a poster in another, unrelated, thread, these are marketed as 'Sumos' in CA.

Laura - I tried grafting without success. The bud was green after 3-4 weeks but it didn't grow and eventually dried out. I will have to ask someone nearby for grafting help or wait for nurseries to start selling them. Which is all good, I really don't need another citrus tree. Hoping the LxN turns out as good as I read about. Still haven't found anyone who personally taste it.

I too had the same experience with the Shiranui T bud grafts... except... I have two - short sections of bud sticks that are atop of Carrizo rootings via whip graft. So far all is still very green. They are in the shade most of the day and I am giving them time... hoping the Carrizo roots and the Shiranui starts growing.

Most all of my Volk rooting attempts were successful, but I did not put a Shiranui atop one of the Volks. Two NZL's took off right away while one just last week began growing - - - - - and these are MARCH rooting/grafts.

enablers!! I hope your grafts take! Sumos are not really a family favorite so I'm not too sad about my lack of success. My GN on C-35 is showing more new growth and blooms than the GN on Carizzo.

Junk4us that's the way to think it won't work but keep thinking that you don't need that Dekapon anyways GN are probably better. I tried some this year for the first time delicious . My 2 Gold Nuggets are coming along nicely I figure 2 more yrs till maybe 1 fruit on each lol. Your GN is spectacular and blooms to boot . I will probably wait till next yr for the Dekapon I still have two new tree's arriving any day now .

Hi Amy I have a New Zealand lemon and a Boukhobza blood orange coming soon . My collection is now complete with the purchase of the Dekopon last night all thanks to you and Perry. Amy be very careful this hobby is extremely addictive in a good way of course. :)

Brian, please, post a picture of your new addition (Shiranui/Dekopon) after it arrives. I fell in love with the fruit and am obsessed with looking at pictures of the trees :) Maybe next season I try to get one. (Junk4us, the mantra is not working ...) This year I must confess that I went a little bit crazy... I first discovered greenscape so I bought all the varieties I dreamed to have for so many years: gold nugget, page, okitsu satsuma, frost owari satsuma, seedless kishu. David is very nice and a pleasure to deal with! Then, I visited floraexotica and got the dekopon and a Sugar Belle. Sugar Belle is a mix between a clementine and minneleo. It should be a little bit smaller than minneleo but sweeter! And some said that it is more resistent to citrus greening... I can post a picture if you want to see it. I plan to add in my collection xie shan, lee x nova and the valentine pummelo. At first, I was not confident that I could grow the pummolo in our climate but I just bought a grow tent to winterize my trees. The day temp is 80F and the nigh temp is 70F so maybe I will try the pummelo after all. I pray that Davis will get the xie shan and lee x nova back in stock before he sell out all the valentine pummelo. The shipping is very expensive and I don t want to pay the shipping only for the pummelo.

Hello Amy there is no such thing as babbling on the citrus forum lol it's all interesting conversation. Oh my Amy and here I thought the Shiranui was your first lol your an old pro at this . You have an amazing collection for a starter absolutely love the varieties you own . David from Greenscape is a very kind and amazing person to talk to and very very knowledgeable love talking to him . Amy I purchased the New Zealand and Boukhobza from David I believe he still has lots of New Zealand but the Boukhobza was his last. The Nova x Lee sounds like a really good one from what I have heard . Amy I was soooooo tempted to purchase the Sugar Belle very close but I realized I have the best now with the Shiranui. I would so love to see that Sugar Belle and the rest of your collection . Looking forward to see your tree's.

here is a picture of my SugarBelle.

She has the same parentage as Page which is minelleo x clementine. From what I learned on the web, the fruits should look like minneleo but a little bit smaller and sweeter! I give her a little bit of support because she is so thin and is very windy here (it is not a vey good summer). I will remove the stake once she will be inside for winter.

Brian... yes temptation is very, very strong! The first time I went to floraexotica I just bought the Dekopon because well, I have to stop somewhere. I couldn t buy to big trees it seems too much at that tome. After I went home, I was not able to forget about the SugarBelle and I am pretty sure that all that thinking and missing shouldn t be good for my health so I went back to buy the SugarBelle!

I talked to David from greenscape yesterday and he is ok to put aside a valentine pummelo for me!!! I am very excite!! After that, I will stop for sure!! No more thinking. I will repeat Junk4us everynight: I don t need more trees. I don t need more trees.

Amy: That's amazing that you guys can buy these locally! Love the Sugarbelle. It sounds intriguing. I read that it's self-fertile, so that's an advantage over Page. What time of year do the fruit ripen? I truly love Minneolas and I buy those to juice in the winter. Thought about growing Page, but Sugarbelle seems a better choice.

I'd be tempted to trim off that long shoot to shape the plant better (and root it---but that's me). Give the plant a lot of light and hopefully sprouts will form on the trunk and it will fill out more.

Hi Amy what a beautiful tree your going to love that one . I have heard that the fruit are much more sweet then the Minneola's. I am so tempted maybe next yr , I've bought so many new varieties of citrus this year 2 Gold nugget, Ruby Red Grapefruit, Shiranui, New Zealand, Boukhobza blood orange , Mango on and on . I know that feeling of I have to have it and not being able to sleep till I have it lol . That's so nice of David he is a very very nice man . Dave: I read somewhere that SugarBelle is supposed to be ready 4-6 weeks before Minneleo. I wish to have some fruits next year because the taste is supposed to be amazing. Like Minneleo but sweeter and more vitamin C.

Brian: what I coincidence! I bought a few mango trees my self this year. What variety is your tree? I have a Nam Dok Mai, Carrie and Glenn. Can you believe that my local nursery sales them for 20$?? Who could resist? For sure not me because I bought three lol.

Amy very very nice collection. Amy a couple of more years and you will not recognize those tree's they grow very quickly . You are going to love the Page wonderful tasting fruit and a prolific producer it's my best . Amy do you have all your tree's outdoors? Amy I always lift the smaller tree's and if they feel heavy I don't water . I find it harder to take care of my smaller tree's because you have to really watch the watering until they develop a decent root system. Lol I bought my Mango on sale to , I picked up a Valencia it's supposed to be really good and a rapid grower. The Glenn is supposed to be very very good also, it was a toss up between the two . Amy are you trying to talk me into getting a Sugar Belle lol do you know how much trouble I would get into lol.
