Time to finish living room HELP please.

Still looking for eight pieces and feel to complete. Sofa, grey flannel is new. Rug is new to us, but is 1910 Persian. Piano is vintage satin black with nickel (home was bought to accommodate it in living room). Considering leather chair posted below, also glass and antique brass coffee table, floor lamp (s). What I envision is new leather chair to replace one currently there, floor lamp between chair and sofa, glass coffee table and matching end table? Need to work into room small foot stool, ottoman (s) maybe opposite end of coffee table. Thinking of chairs and vintage table by windows for cribbage, puzzles or cup of tea and a book on snowy days.

I need guidance such as love the glass coffee table in the gold color not sure about matching end table and what kind of lamp would sit nice there. Would I be better off with pair of floor lamps?

i think that table with the fold down sides would be nice there.with either an unusual or pretty lamp or a nice vase, maybe with flowers, no? ok, you have to remember i can be a little freaky at times.

Love your fun, but a table will not fit in that space because of the excessive baseboard (metal heat diffusers original to home) that combined with the door opening into the stairs. That is why I was looking for something for the wall like a mirror. I can take a picture of the area tomorrow
  • 9 years ago
Here is a photo of the wall by door thinking a mirror and the opposite side of the room (what would be reflected). Know it is not perfect reflecting view.

you could put a wall mounted half table? i am not getting involved with the mirror, you like it, that is fine i am just trying to give you something more useful there with it. i understand you have large vents just did not know how big. with a table there, even if brought out to accomodate vents, you could keys and stuff there.

Need to say my thoughts are with all who are suffering through the storm and worrying about their future.
I received my new lamps and love them, but as with all new items the change has be befuddled and second guessing my next purchase.

I have the leather chair on order need to decide on the coffee table. Thought I was going with the brass, but questioning if the chrome or another option is better.

Reason for table is really drawn to it and think the glass will lighten up the space and let the beauty of the vintage rug show.

Need to make a decision today husband does not love shopping and wants me to get table on order. Considering the coffee table in polished nickel instead of the aged brass. Any feedback would be appreciated I am decision paralyzed at this point.

Better photo of living room with new lamps
  • 9 years ago

I adore your room. You have made great choices so far:) I love your new lamps and think the Williams Sonoma aged brass coffee table will look great with it. It is my favorite coffee table so I am hoping you will get it so I can live vicariously through you;)

Here is a link to your other thread...in case you lost it and want to post your decision there as well...I noticed you had a couple of great PROS weighing in...

    Kjoy1,

Thank you for you kind words and THANK YOU for photo shopping the chair in the room for me.

Can you tell me how to do that? Would love to see the coffee table in the space. At this point I am torn between the aged brass and the polished nickel coffee table was hoping I could get someone to weigh in here the right or best choice.

The polished nickel would accompany the nickel on the piano and the casters on the sofa.

Also, room is fairy open to kitchen which is all Carrara marble with black island white cabinets stainless and polished chrome.

Diane...I use good old photoshop:) If I could get a straight on photo of your sofa like this...

Or a angled picture like this...

I will try and photoshop it into your room:)

    Kjoy1,

Thank you, thank you. I no longer have photo shop sadly my computer crashed and was recently replaced by a Mac I am not very proficient using yet. Thankfully most photos and data were retrieved.

Will one of these sofa photos work?

Why don't you do something like this by the front door? No legs....I just attaches to the wall.
Only put a mirror over it.

    Melissa,

Thank you. Love the look, however, there is not enough space I will post a photo. I am looking for a mirror for the wall thinking vintage, maybe wood
  • 9 years ago
See photo below. This was originally a cape cod and due to city requirements we were not able to move the front door out. And there was not a budget friendly way to move the stairs. At the point of relocating the staircase we would have been money ahead to tear down and start over, hence the compromise. This leaves a nice wall space that I believe is crying for something.

Thankfully we mainly use the side door entrance which was part of the addition which functions so much better. Lots of space, coat closet and brick floor.

    Kjoy1,

Wow! Thank you. Now I can see the brass table would look nice with the llamas.

How do I decide between the brass and polished nickel?

Diane R, really love your room and choices, very similar style to mine. I am currently having my car serviced so looking at my phone but love your coffee table choice. This was the coffee table I was going to go with but size restrictions I had one made instead.

My first instinct, being a pure layman :) is the aged brass. I feel it would go better with your lovely lamp choices.

Having said that we cannot see the chrome for example on view of the kitchen and perhaps it is being on my phone at the moment cannot make out your sofa castors.

    Beautiful home Diane R.

I do think you have room for something to hang, not too deep, though. I love this carved mirror that Lauren Liess has in her foyer, too

Diane, love how you have transformed the exterior of your home...great job!

Thank you for kind words and I agree phones are not the best for seeing details.

In addition to the castors on the sofa the baby grand piano is satin black with nickel hinges, casters etc.

But, yes the lamps I fell in love with are satin brass. I have a lot of black iron, stairs and beams so needed that color.

The coffee table is what is driving me to finally finish this room it is a perfect marriage of 1930s classic for the room, but I am stuck on the nickel vs soft brass and husband wants to get it in order tomorrow

    Melissa Gallagher,

On paper there appears to be enlightened room, however, when people are entering they naturally fill that space to allow the door to close. Lovely shelfs, but must stick with mirror or art work.
    wmsimons85,

I have been following your home, it is simply lovely. The table you had made is beautiful.

Thank you for thinking we have similar styles as yours is amazing.

    Your exterior changes look great!

Diane R, if you have seen that thread of mine then you know with all the advice I have received I have no right to give any advice! :). And thank you for the kind words.

Even though that gorgeous chair you have on order is much more in keeping than my "club" leather chairs, it still feels like I found a kindred spirit with linen and leather. :).

I can see the sofa castors better but they appear to be subte. I think which ever finish you decide on will be gorgeous. Can't wait to see what you do.

I wouldn't do the same floor lamp on both sides of the couch. A floor lamp on one side and small table on the other side would be great so it's not too matchy matchy. I like picking up the brass from the lamp in either the coffee table or end table but not both. Whichever is not brass and glass could be a rustic wood table to go with your wood beams look. It's a lovely room!

Put one by desk/table that I see to the left in pic.

The brass coffee table definitely has better photos of it but here is the polished nickel with the only photo I could find...

    I vote for the brass:)

    Kjoy1

That is amazing again thank you. I think brass is the right choice.
    Kjoy1,

Husband thinks it looks amazing too. He loved how you photo shopped the tables and chair.

Ordered the brass one today in about four weeks I will upload a new photo. Thank you to all who gave assistance.

    Great choice!

    Flo,

Hopefully you will see that I have posted a few photos. I have been meaning to thank you and show you the room you were so gracious to help me with. Sorry they are a bit dark and poor quality snapped them with my iPad.

The biggest change to the initial plan is the bookcase. It still needs a few items I need time to go through all our books and travel trinkets.

Looks great:) How do you like your coffee table?
    kjoy1,

Yes, I love the coffee table and owe you a big thanks for the photo shopping that helped me decide that the aged brass was the right choice.

The joy of a Persian rug is that almost any color can be found in it, so decorating color choices are vast. I’m sure you have both the tan of the leather chair and the gray of the sofa in your rug. Maybe you can sew up (or have made) a couple of pillows in a traditional or Persian-inspired fabric to put on the sofa. I have a Persian rug paired with a traditional fabric (drapes and covered footstool), plus an Ikat pillow. They go together because the same colors are repeated. See photo below:
