Feeling like crap

Friday night we lost our beloved cat princess. She was an (approximately) 7 year old tortoiseshell who had never had any health problems. We noticed on Thursday that she seemed a bit quiet and was sitting in an odd position. On Friday it was the same and she was refusing to eat which was very unusual for her. By that night we noticed that she seemed to be having trouble breathing and was panting.

We took her to the emergency vet where she was diagnosed with pleural effusion. The vet said that she was in very bad shape and he didn't know if she would be able to handle the stress of draining the fluids surrounding her lungs..

We told the vet to go ahead and do whatever he could to save her, but sadly she didn't make it. She died on the table that night. I just don't understand what could cause a seemingly perfectly healthy cat to decline that quickly. The vet said that pleural effusion could be caused by cancer, infection and several other things. He didn't seem to be sure what the origin of it was.. Has anyone ever dealt with this before??

Oh, how devastating. I'm so very sorry :( She looked like a very sweet girl. While I've never dealt with that particular situation, I have had a young, seemingly healthy pet die suddenly without knowing the circumstances which led to it.

Oh, I'm so sorry for your loss. She was a pretty girl. Our beloved Cowboy died 2 months ago, although I'm feeling better, I still miss him so much. He went from appearing fine, to being at death's door in 3 days time, each day we brought him to the vet, tests, blood work, X rays, nothing definitive confirmed, the vet suspected a heart circulation problem. She did say that cats instinctively hide their illness, its' only when it gets so severe that they can no longer hide it. It is so heartbreaking to lose a much loved pet, they are truly a member of the family.

I am so sorry. We lost our 10 month old kitten a couple weeks ago, she went from seemingly healthy to being diagnosed with megacolon to passing away prior to surgery at the Specialist/Emergency clinic 3 days later. Very, very tough to deal with, I know how you feel.

I'd like to thank all of you for your kind words of support with this awful situation. After a few days it's finally sunk in and I'm still missing her. It might sound selfish to say, but we have three other cats, and Princess was the only one that I really liked out of any of them. She was a lap cat who always wanted to be held and it was never about food..
