Historic Craftsman tub surround missing?

My and my neighbor's 1930's Bungalow bathrooms both have original cast iron tubs that appear to be missing tub surrounds. Both are rectangles and not clawfoot. Both have the original floor tile that goes all the way to the base of the tub. The tubs have a lip and an unfinished bottom. My question is does anyone know what these types of tubs are supposed to look like? Why have the floor tile go all the way to the base of the tub if it supposed to covered with a surround? Or if the tub isn't supposed to have surround then why doesn't the tub appear to be a whole tub like the one in the 2nd bathroom, which is also original? Thank you!
