To paint the brick or not that is the question

One of my many dilemmas as my husband and I attempt to update/renovate our mid century home. Please help!!!
His grandfather built this house in 1957 and we recently inherited it. Our goal is to bring it back to its former glory days without loosing its original charm. We're thinking painting the brick of the fire place and possibly extending the mantle might give the living room an updated feel without ruining the retro feel?!

Open to all and any advice and ideas! Thanks!

That looks more like stone than brick to me and it's rather artfully done. I don't think I'd touch it. I'd work with it.

Clear off the mantel. Put a large piece of art or a large mirror above the mantel. DO NOT paint the brick/stone.

Rethink the wall colour. Use Farrow and Ball's BORROWED LIGHT on the ceiling. Use floor and/or table lamps for more flattering lighting.

I agree that the FP shouldn't be painted.

Agree to definitely do NOT paint the brick. Wall paint to complement the brick would be a much better option. Especially if you want to restore the home to it's original design.

You want to bring back the original glory, but want to destroy the ORIGINAL fireplace by painting it? Do you want up dated or retro? Contradiction.

I am not into White walls but think it looks terrific in mid century homes, must be the contrast of the timber furniture and white walls, otherwise you could add a accent wall with a blue colour like in pic. I would leave the fireplace and hang a big canvas. Some inspirational pics
