No problems in soucal. Just try to keep winter rains off them. They might be larger in ground,potted plants will never have full sized fruit. They will still be delicious,but not the same size of the big fruit off of the bigger in ground plants. They like a fast draining mix...you should use lots of lava gravel or grit or perlite growing them

Along the coast,sun is best..inland some shade.

I have some that made it through our wet,cool winter here in the bay area. I should pot them past the gallon size and put an apple next to them. One seems old enough to fruit. I have done that on indoor plants. This is my first outdoor try.

Yeah I just was wondering about the winter rains. I'll try to move it before the rains start. Also, I am wondering why a pineapple wouldn't do as well in a pot? They don't have a very big root system at all.

They do fine in pots. The fruit will never be as large as in ground plants. Unless you use garbage can sized pots and lots of loose soil mix.

There is an article on the net from the LA times about growing them in soucal. The closer to the coast,the easier it gets.

I'm pretty close to the coast so I should be ok. I've had the pineapple in a pot for three months and the plant has doubled in size. I don't expect fruit though until a year from now.

I haven't had any luck with growing pineapple tops in pots. I'll try a faster draining mix or in ground for the next one.

Just saw for sale at HD large commercial looking Pineapples for sale..with a couple of suckers. Oh,they were in PERFECT condition and color. Either out of a greenhouse or from Hawaii. $30.
