Pruning a Tupelo

We have a Wildfire Tupelo tree that we planted last year. There is one branch at the bottom that I don't care for how it's growing down towards the ground. When should I prune it? Where do I cut...or does that not matter? Anywhere else I should trim to get it to branch out? And to shape it?

(Yes I know there are lots of weeds there to get cleaned up. And yes I know the Leucodendron need moved...don't know when to do that either. LOVE the grevillea that we have back there, 'Long John'.)

Pruning cuts should be made near the bark collar where the branch comes out from the trunk. No sealant required. Don't leave a stub. https://www.arborday.org/trees/tips/keys-to-pruning.cfm

Basic pruning is pretty much the same for all trees except fruit trees.

Congratulations on choosing a beautiful tree. I have been trying to find Tupelo 'Afterburner' without success. I think the only difference might be that Wildfire might be slightly broader.

I know what you mean when you say you can't wait for it to fill out more. I bought a Nyssa sinensis in a 15 gallon size this summer. I had given up trying to find one because it is so rare, when I was suddenly given an opportunity to take this one. I took it in spite of its poor condition and damaged leader, I'm hoping I can see a way to improve the leader problem after leaf drop this fall. And I'm hoping it will overcome it's neglected appearance when it leafs out next spring. And fills in more - please!
