Arc floor lamps - anyone not love these?

I'm looking for a lamp to light a dining room table in a room with no overhead lighting and was considering an arc floor lamp as the design (mainly, the long horizontal reach) would seem to fit my needs well. However, it seems to me that the light thrown off by such a light may not be that useful. Has anyone else here had that experience, or do you enjoy your arc lamps? I'm asking as a friend of mine had a similar style arc lamp but with a fabric shade. The light it threw off was not diffusive enough (despite the fabric shade) to really light up the small room it was in, and was surprisingly not great for reading/writing either (even when directly underneath the light).

Our arc light is a Nova similar to this one. We use it as a reading lamp (320 watts equivalent with LED bulbs). It provides excellent reading light (DW loves it) and fair general lighting for the room it's in. Lots of shadows owing to its location.

There also would be the question of how far out the arc went; maybe never far enough to really centralize it as a light source.

How about an arc floor lamp that has light along its body? Check the one by Brightech. It's very cool for diffused light.

I don't see anything wrong with it. It actually looks fairly nice to me and unique. The proper light with enough lighting would be key... most likely one with a light in color shade vs. a metal shade to give more light.

Here are some ideas. This fixture works with E26 bulbs up tp 120 watts, also works with dimmable or Hue Bulbs, which provides enough lighting output for reading, etc.
