Cuttings act as young, so my guess the age is mostly in number of trusses. The more trusses you have on a plant (basically taller) the older it acts (poorer fruit set, smaller leaf). Maybe it's related to problems with nutrient circulation in the tall plant, or maybe something else, like the root mass getting less efficient with age. I know someone who has fourth generation cuttings and they seem just fine still (cuttings from cutting from cuttings, etc). Sure can save some money if you plant some expensive hybrid seeds.

At university we were taught that in horticulture a plant had two different ages, there is the 'genetic' age and try as I might I cannot recall what the actual age of the growing live cells were technically called.

ETA: Just tossed this thinking the very interesting topic could benefit from a bump. Or, perhaps not.
