Pegboard Wall in Kitchen

Getting ready to do a gut reno, and I've got a corner with 2 thin walls that I'd like to do in pegboard that I can hang hooks from. Stainless steel preferably, as that is what my appliances are going to be.

Anyone done this, or have any great ideas?

This is part of my set-up currently, and I'd like to migrate some of this stuff to the pegboard.

I have pegboard in the potting shed, and I always think of Julia Child's kitchen, which is on display at the Smithsonian.

I just think of it as visual clutter. The pegboards that you see are usually staged. The one above looks like real use and it would be too much clutter for me.

I have used a pegboard in a narrow townhouse. It worked wonderfully, but I used it only for a few pots and pans, so it was relatively clutter free. However, I had absolutely no choice in the matter. The kitchen was minuscule.

@mama - yes, I've been to see Julia's kitchen (more than once). It's great!

@beachem - it's either that or clutter in the drawers. But I, like Julia, enjoy not having to rummage around when looking for the right sized ladle, or my ginger grater.

@Rita - as this is an NYC apartment, I understand miniscule!

Yes, I've seen it too, but I doubt she had an open floor plan, and not many of us would want that pegboard visible from the living room.

It's too clutter-y for me to have in the kitchen ... but I'm planning something similar in my pantry. Behind a closed door, it's wonderfully simple and inexpensive storage. I have a small pegboard in my current pantry, and I could easily utilize 3Xs as much "peg". I actually already have a brightly colored METAL pegboard (purchased from Amazon) for my new pantry -- they have a wide assortment of colors, and some models have shelves and bins as well as simple hooks:

Yet another reason for a kitchen to not be open to the LR.

Agree with visual clutter. It doesn't have to be clutter in the drawers. It just needs to be organized in the drawers. You will just need to plan for a lot of drawers near your cook top/prep area and maybe you don't need that many ladles! ;) let's remember Julia Child was a chef not a decorator/designer. In that picture of her kitchen she had pictures hung on the fronts of cabinets...not a good look. And let's be honest do you really need that many pots and pans? To me that's borderline hoarding. I understand the lack of space but the storage solutions today are endless.

I guess I'm a chef/cook too, @MaWizz; done properly, it doesn't look at all like clutter to me - it actually looks beautiful.

Oh, some of my (hoarded) pots and pans. Yes - I need this many...

Should I get rid of my gelato maker too?

In my tiny kitchen remodel, I am using my jars of spices, bottles of oil, canisters of coffee/teas, and my coffee mugs as part of my decor. They will all be covering the backsplash area when sitting on SS shelves. To some that is visual clutter, to me it is handy and a sign of beautiful working kitchen. I will also have my lodge enameled cast iron apple on display on the counter between uses in the oven.

In the past I hung utinsels off of black cooling racks with S hooks. Very handy. Pegboard could give it MCM or industrial look. Go for it.

Mitch The pots and pans I was referring to hoarding were Julia's in the picture link above. She even has them hanging on the door. No sneaking in quietly there Lol. and yes if you have 5 gelato makers keep one and give the rest to friends :) But for your new space plan for a nice place to store your gelato maker and other occasional use appliances. I'm sure you don't make gelato everyday. And if you cook a lot you will really appreciate all that counter top space to work. Also, if you cook a lot and I do too you will really appreciate not having to move all that stuff as we are constantly wiping down the countertops in busy kitchens! Don't forget ultimately it's what you want and like :)

I am thinking of Histokitch's kitchen which is lovely and has a wall of pegboard next to the range. Unfortunately, due to Evil Photobucket's new policy, the photos are no longer readily visible. I was able to find a page of thumbnails of the kitchen, but if you click on the individual pics, they won't open. Perhaps you can get a rough idea of how lovely her kitchen is from the thumbnails:

I followed the link Friedajune posted and if you click on one of the pictures a slideshow-type display appears. You can scroll through the pictures that way. Their sizes vary greatly -- some are small and some are quite large. I think it's b/c that's the size that was uploaded.

Thanks for the tip Buehl about the slideshow. That enabled me to capture more pics:

Mitch, I'm happy to see that Cuisinart steam/toaster oven. Even though I am attempting to banish nearly everything from my countertops to eliminate clutter, that is the one appliance that I decided MUST sit on my countertop at all times! I don't see those in many photos on here and find it to be one of the most versatile little appliances ever.

salex - I was an early adopter of that Cuisi steam oven. As a matter of fact, I started a thread on eGullet in December of 2013 (which now has 100s of replies), and received my oven Jan., 2014 - so I've had it for 3 1/2 years, and it's worked like a charm the whole time. One of the best countertop appliances I've ever purchased!

    My issues with pegboard ...

1 - critters can and will move in behind it

2 - the pegs/hooks tend to come out when I remove something, so I'm constantly replacing the danged hooks.

I prefer to have my most used pots and pans on a pot rack - easy to reach and take up less space than in a drawer. I did buy a Rev-a-Shelf pull out that has cans for utensils as I detest reaching into the jumble a drawer of utensils easily becomes, and I no longer wanted them on my counter. I would use peg board if it was needed and worked in my kitchen. I do have it for tools in the basement.

I like clutter. It says to me that the space is an organic part of life. But, to each his/her own. I've thought about it, but pots and things aren't as easy to get off a pegboard hook/peg as I would like.....I like the concept, but it's easier to pull things out of drawers. What I might add is hanging utensil buckets (for slotted spoons, spatulas, etc).

My mother has pegboard hanging on the side of her refrigerator. It's not facing an open dining room, so I guess it's hidden, but I love baking at her house because everything is just there where you need it and can see it. She uses it for measuring cups measuring spoons, etc

@Toronto Veterinarian - totally agree with your first sentiment.

To be sure, the pegboard I'd install would be for utensils, as in the photo in the first post, which I've never had trouble with.

@cluelessincolorado - you're not so clueless...as you mention, everything is just where you need it!

I decided against pendants over my peninsula because in the 3D rendering, they broke up a clean, open space. At some point, I realized that my kitchen will NEVER actually look like that because it will be a very very hard working kitchen and we just have stuff. And some of it will be on the counter, even with new and more and better storage. So pendants are back in.

At the end of the day, clutter is in the eye of the beholder. I'll be honoring Julia's pegboard with This getting pride of place:

Loads of pegboard ideas on Pinterest. Most of them use it for storing pots and pans AND utensils. Here's an idea for small kitchens that might be of interest to the ABB club.

This. The mere thought makes me shudder all over and I don't care what Julia did. She did lots of dumb stuff.

I found a great online seller of what looks to be great pegboard, in various metals, custom sizes, etc. And will be doing a corner of my kitchen in stainless...

This is what that corner looks like with the stainless pegboard. Getting close to a finish.

Starting to look better with some stuff on it,

Thank you so much for posting this product. We will be redoing our cottage kitchen next summer and because it is not heated in the winter we can't do a ceramic backsplash. I think this would look great and be very practical. I just have to get over the idea of creatures setting up house behind. I don't think they would, but the thought could be off putting :)

I don't necessarily see that any creatures would set up behind it any more than they'd set up behind my appliances, cabinets, in between walls, etc. But then again, I'm on the 15th floor of an NYC building...not too many creatures up this high, and there's nothing to eat or drink back there.

It looks better than Julia's at least, LOL. The only experience I have with pegboards is the one on the side of my metal tool cabinet, and it's annoying because the pegs fall out nearly every time I take a tool off. I'd never tolerate that in my kitchen, even if I could deal with the "cluttered" look. :-). Hopefully yours has hooks that are more secure?

Of course. They're engineered to not fall out. From their website:

Most Peg Hooks have integral 0.250" locking tabs which hold the Peg Hook in place for maximum security.

And they sell peg locks too; I guess if you're really worried.

Yes I am aware of the peg locks, have used them and they are a PITA too. I'm not "worried", not sure why you would make such a comment. Was just hoping yours were more secure. Sorry if you took offense.

Hang it on a double French cleat if you are worried about critters. Easy to remove and clean once a week if you’re the type that pulls out the stove and fridge to clean behind them once a week. If you’re not, then rest assured that there are far more places in your kitchen with active ecosystems than you can ever imagine. Spiders are everywhere. And they are your friends. They catch the gnats and beetles and other bugs that DO live in your home with you.

Thanks sophie. I think I used a french cleat to hang a big mirror once and, if I recall, it wasn't too hard to do. I'm not the type to clean behind weekly, but at the lake, it is best to do it once in a while. Neighbours at the lake spray their cottage every season to get rid of the spiders. I give them my lecture about how spiders are an indication of an overall healthy environment, but they just roll their eyes at me (having said that, I admit to squealing like a teenager if one dares to crawl on me).
