I think it means they are slow. I mean they would go through those colors anyway but at such a pace as to not be considered as have turned and stay in that phase. My second crop on the old plants have been heat stalled and I have only had 2 turn and they are as you describe.

I actually just noticed that in my tomato garden this morning myself. I have about a dozen tomatoes that look like they should be picked if they were yellow or orange varieties, but they are all red when ripe tomatoes. Maybe it's the weather.

My Rutgers tomatoes seem to start out as very pale green, almost white. I don't know if it's unusual since it's my first year having enough fruit to notice. At some point they turn bright green, long before ripening starts. What's odd is that there is a lot of variation as to when this color change occurs. Some are still small, while others are fully grown. I lost one of the fully grown ones that are still that color due to either squirrel shenanigans or wind (it was laying undamaged on my deck). I brought it into the house with a small hope that it will ripen, but it is turning bright yellow instead of green.

You are risk of becoming a tomatoarian and you should probably move away from the tomato before you become infatutuated with growing the perfect fruit. Fair Warning.
