Choosing LR chairs

I am finally turning my attention to replacing my LR chairs. It's been an off and on again search. I do like the chairs I have now, the small scale and "fit" is good, but they need reupholstering and I would prefer swivel chairs. This is our only living area now, and comfort for reading and TV watching is also important.

How crazy is this. DH and I like the feel of this IMG Nordic 92 swivel recliner. We both even like the deep red colour. I am 5'1" and the seat depth and height are comfortable and so is the neck. The style though is quite a distance from our more traditional furnishings. What do you think?

Have sat in that style chair, very comfy for reading or watching TV. If you like it, go for it.

When I saw the pics of your room, now gone, I will admit my thought was to see if you could find a style and color that would blend into the beautiful room better. I honestly can't see the style of chair in your room unless you plan to make other choices. Do you think you'd like the chair in another more neutral color, so they wouldn't be the odd pieces in the mostly white furnishings, otherwise traditional room?

Thanks for the comments. I am torn - finding a chair with both comfort and that suits the room. I would consider a light creamy colour that might blend with the other furniture, or another style. My DH likes the red! I can't match the exact white leather and the choice of fabrics at least for this mfr was dreary.

    Here are some photos.

It seems that you'd want to change out your rug at a minimum if you bring in the red leather. I Googled 'Upholstered Swivel chairs', and came up with these - HERE.

I certainly understand that that you'd want to sit in any chair of interest before buying them, but you might find others that you could try. There are other colors and fabrics available in the IMG line, but I haven't been able to find them all in one place - Some are shown HERE

Houzz is having a sale on their swivels. The drawback is you can't sit on them to try them out. The Dutalier is very comfortable as I have three in my lakehouse. They are swivel-gliders which means you can rock in them too. Guests love them. Also you may want to consider a recliner swivel chair. I purchased one for my granddaughter and she's in love with it.

On the other hand, I think people should buy what they love and make it work which I'm sure you could do with the chosen chairs. I'll take comfort over a showroom any day.

I was in a similar situation a while back as I have mostly traditional/transitional taste and furniture and needed a comfy chair for family room. DH also has serious back issues...... I looked and looked trying to find a decent looking comfy recliner that would not break the bank. We had sat in chairs similar to what you are showing, in a hotel and were struck by how amazingly great they were. We ended up getting a version of it and while it might not look perfect with the rest of the room I honestly have no second thoughts about it. It;s like a fixture to me. I would get it again. (maybe 2 next time).

I think the red chairs can work. The art will help tie them into the room. Switch out your traditional lamps and side tables with more modern silhouettes to bring it together. I would keep the brass swing-arm and tall adjustable one by the loveseat.

I mix furniture and accessories from different periods/styles with abandon. Nothing stands out as "different" because of the variety. I think that you can get them to work.

The thing that gives me pause is if you'd be getting the foot stool. I'm afraid that you may have to remove the loveseat in order to fit the new chairs.

My3dogs, thanks for your comments and the google references, including the ones on the IMG Nordic 92. I had never even heard of this mfr until this week (same co. as Stressless line out of Norway). There is only one IMG retailer here in my Canadian city and they seem to have a limited selection available to them. I do like the white-ish rug with the white leather and pale wall tones, so I'm not planning to change it.

Yaya, I definitely want a swivel recliner not so much because I want to recline (although DH would) but because of the higher back than, say, a tub chair, for head support when watching TV or reading. I do need to try in person because so many hit me awkwardly in the back of the head and leave my feet dangling. The travails of being below the 5th percentile! Gliding at your lake house sounds heavenly!

Mdln, Sheila and Yaya, I appreciate your thoughts on comfort and that maybe this could be made to work in the room. I am sorry to hear about your husband's back, Sheila, and glad you found a chair that works.

Alex, I am pondering your comments on red and the artwork tying in the colour. In addition to the large painting over the sofa which is brightly coloured, I have a predominantly red painting at the DR end of the room.

You have all been so helpful. I am going to do some more exploring, but I would appreciate more views about whether a creamy colour, the red, or some other colour would be better IF we choose this comfortable chair.

I see red art. But if the chair will be with all the creaminess, and delicate flower colors in the large art, no red... I'd almost rather see photoshop of a medium grey - is it in the rug? So many grey, and this is flowery for 270:

I would put those red chairs in your room with no hesitation. I think it will add an unexpected element, but they are good looking, seem to be the same quality as your other furnishings and will be FUN! And comfy! The art and your red elsewhere will help tie them in.

And your husband likes them. Praise be that he doesn't want a puffy black or brown oversized recliner like so many other people have to try to decorate around :-)

The rug has a very pale gray occasional pattern (sort of Morrocan) and the gray has a tiny touch of a lavender undertone. The rug is not down at the moment, but here is another photo closer up. The star of the moment is Lilliput.

I think the red would overpower. Woof!

Awww, Lilliput will always be the star!

I shouldn't talk about things blending. My 3 dogs only use the floor to pass between their favorite chair or sofa. All of my leather or upholstered furniture is covered with Sure-Fit or other covers. Mine are often out in the yard exploring (and digging in the case of Riley) so my upholstered/leather pieces tend to be darker colors.

Obviously, Lilliput is far more refined! :-)

My3dogs, love your canine trio! As for Lilliput, it's true that she's a wee bit dainty and for some reason doesn't have the ability to jump UP onto furniture so I don't have to be as careful as you, but she is always making sure that she is invited and lifted up - a true lapdog;)

Ghostly, I am glad you like that painting, we love it! The red one is by the same Canadian artist. I have some friends who would like to take that one home too.

Oly, I could likely be convinced on the red and you are very persuasive. So right about not having to cope with a puffy monstrosity. Well, that would never happen;)

Everdebz, thanks for sending those options.

Olychick said it well, "no hesitation, unexpected element, same quality, fun, comfy, husband likes them, (not) puffy oversized recliner."
