Project Ficus

Title Kinda sounds like a Si Fi movie haha ,might end up just being fiction.Got me some nice looking little ficus plants in mail today ,been dwelling on idea of planting on top of a rock, and came up with this idea, already had the 2 inch diamond hole cutter ,and a place to get some flat rocks .So while waiting on trees this week I drilled some holes.this is what I have came up with as of today .the Ficus is palmeri.some pics of how its done.I have no idea if it will work, but hoping it will send out roots through the flat rocks in time and over the top one also .rock stack is 5 inch tall, pot 12 inch

That should look really cool in a few;). The plant looks nice and healthy and green. Whenever I hear ficus I think dusty house plants, but this one is definitely not that:).

OT I love your greenhouse. What I wouldn't give to have one. It would be nice to have that option to go out there on sleepless nights to mess around with my plants:).

Great idea! Now I want one, too.

Actually the green room is attached to my shop where I work lol hard to work some days ,its getting to small also I'm going have to make bigger one or quit collecting plants.Don't like that last option ,I used could set in it ,just standing room now haha

I like this idea. Do you have a rod to stabilize the stack so it won't shift?

Aloebot that is a good idea, I just stacked them and put some soil in between the rocks .its nice and stable right now.

Update on the Ficus project, just starting to see roots coming out from between the rocks,It seems to have did good on the the transplanting .it took about 2 weeks to get roots coming out. Know wonder there called rock stranglers,I'm curious see how the roots progress .

Here is another ficus on rock started today ,its the red leaf vein version,it is in 10 pot setting on a limestone rock that goes to bottom of pot.Be interesting see if it decides to root itself on

Here is a another pic on how the ficus has rooted since Sept 2. little over 2 months time now and has developed nice thick roots.trying to get it rooting over the other side of rock now see how that goes .

Tanpexotics you're giving a whole new meaning to ficus;). Usually when I think of ficus I picture ugly dusty house plants;).

    Very nice:)!

Yeah I got couple others that are dusty and roots running every where here is one

In order to get roots to grow over the flat rocks with your first ficus, I suspect you may find it necessary to cover the rocks with some moss or other moisture retentive material for a time -- particularly as those rocks look like they may be slate? The limestone rock used with the red leaf -- is it one of those rough rocks that tend to wick water a bit?

Yeah I should have packed around the rocks when I first did it ,I get some time in the coming weeks going to .The rock with the red leaf is very weathered limestone ,actually nice and solid with nice texture, looks alot better in person. Red leaf has made some good root progress it had really thin roots when got the plant, now one is as big as a pencil .

Great results :) Thank you for posting update.

When I hear ficus, I automatically think of Ficus Benjamina and few very similar ones. Fond out it is quite a large genus - had to google it because leaves in yoru pics didn't look like ficus (Benjamina) to me...glad to learn something new today!:)

These are doing great. I particularly like the root over the side look and how theyl run along the cracks. What is your watering schedule. My one plant gets the same attention most of my plants do (almost none). I have a hard time keeping even small leaves on it and it really hasn't grown much in about 5 years or more. Since I collect rocks, I would like to start a project like this. What kind of time commitment is this?

Aloe I do keep them watered . have noticed few times leaves droopy was saying water me. They do like there water

I wish II would have had a root to put behind the plant but didn't have at the time.

Thought abou piling some dirt up on rock see if could get some roots going that way I think it will ,so might be a project for tomorrow

Yeah if you got one I would go to work on it

Thanks, I will have to go through some of my rocks now.

Yeah be good Saturday project for you lol

It's right at 3 inch wide now ,have no idea how it's going to grow ,should fatten up pretty good with all its leaves it has ,time will tell

Aloe Look like great plants to work with when they are growing they like there water and I don't ever let mine dry completely out even when not growing

Here some work I did to mine today in the hopes of getting some roots going this way

Cut a small spot and applied root hormone to the spot have no idea if work or not but going to see

About 2 months have past looking much fuller now from last chop

    exo,

Have you cosidered burying the caudex amongst semi-irregularly arranged rocks (as such to cause there to be a growing space below, with a thinnish layer of soil around the roots and top/bottom of growing space with a thickish layer) and letting the caudex do its own thing for a year or three, then exposing its hopefully petroshaped caudex for staging? In case you haven't and have a plant you can do this with (a younger one is easier to shape, naturally), I hope you give it a shot - you'll be wildly impressed.

I have not tried that with ficus before sounds interesting

Do have a young E hedyotoides growing in container full of rocks ..been there few years need look at it sometime see how it's going

Well got a root coming out from behind plant finally These ficus really root to water where it is covered it has multiple branching of root , so maybe one day it will have good grasp all over the rock

Well I figured it would happen some time it's been growing pretty good finally cracked a rock

Going on 2 years now Ion top of the rock pile

Here is other ficus on rock going on couple years it has grown alot

couple Dioscorea seedlings sprouted up from.from seeds I put there

    last modified: 7 years ago

    tW

Hope you'll post photo again - would like to see further 'destruction' of the rock by the roots!

I like the second one too, and the seedlings...I do not have any caudex plants.

Just Aeonium balsamiferum doing slightly - only very slightly! - similar thing: I put the rock there to support plant when repotted, and forgot all about it. Air roots eventually grew over it and into soil. I am going to leave it there and see what happens. I am sure roots of aeoniums are not as strong as roots of ficus, so there will not be any crushing of the rock! :) I hope plant lives long enough, haha (it is grown from a cutting - original plant came from Jeff some time ago):

Now I wish I used bigger rock...

Very cool. Theres a guy in my club who posts his work all the time on Facebook, he has many plants growing on rocks without holes being drilled. Look him up on FB, "cascade cactus and succulents society of washington state"

Rina your roots will probally thicken and get tough over time

Nice look there setting on little rock .reminds me of this one setting on little rock and in very small bonsai pot it has really kept it small compared to iits cousin the pot 5×4×1-3/4

Can't get pics load right now maybe later
