My first tiling project

My husband and I are in the process of redoing our kitchen. We are trying to do as much of it ourselves as possible to save money. Here's a before/after picture of my first tiling project. It's not perfect by any means, nor was it as easy as I thought it would be. I doubt I'll ever do it again! :)

Wow! It's beautiful! I'm glad you were honest, though, in saying you'd never do it again. That ends my thoughts of a DIY tile job.

    You did a nice job!

Beautiful, I would never even attempt such a thing.

Congrats! It looks great. I did our kitchen BS with glass tiles and I would agree ignorance is bliss regarding what I was getting into. I would not want to do it again either.

Nice job. It looks good. I'm not confident I could tile. I would need someone else to figure out the layout!

@gsciencechick - YES! Ignorance is bliss! All the videos on YouTube made it look and sound so easy. “You can update your kitchen in a weekend”. Yeah, right. It took me about a month to do our kitchen and I’m still not done! I almost gave up and hired someone near the end. I just didn’t want to do it anymore.

@sheeisback the layout was a nightmare to figure out! Now when I see a "How to tile a backsplash" video I say, "Hire a professional".

I think I had a couple of days to do ours. But my back was killing me from leaning over the counter.

It does look really professional, but I agree it is nice to hear your decision to never do it again. I am thinking that about painting kitchen cabinets. I would probably regret it!

Did those, too. That also was a bigger job because I had to take them down, fill holes, prime, and paint, but it involves both sides of the doors. So, not horribly challenging, but again, more work than I imagined. And our space is small. I think I'd call a pro for when I have to do it again.

Wow. Are those about 1" x 3" tiles? Ambitious first tiling project. Nice. Don't give up on DIY. As you know, there is a tremendous amount of satisfaction in doing something you weren't sure you were capable of.

@rosesstink - yes, they are 1 x 3 tiles (Glazzio Crystile). I thought it wouldn't be so bad since they are on mesh, but the sheets were heavy, so it wasn't easy to put up by myself. After I did the wall behind the stove, I decided I hated the way it came out so I removed it all and started over. *shaking my head*

Here's a picture of how that came out. Excuse the outlets, I haven't put them back in yet.

    Looks great!!!

well done, Now you get to say "Not bad for my first time!" every other time you tile and then watch the homeowner's faces droop. Much fun.

It looks great to me for a first time! I think it is a much nicer looking back splash then the original one too.

You did a great job. I'm sure if you would have left out you did the job yourself someone would have asked who your tiler was.
