Help! Wood stair stain finish!

We are in the process of a new build and upgraded to wood stairs. (Oak) I bought a custom stain at sherwin Williams to blend well with our wood tile floors. I have 2 oak samples. Both stained with the custom stain. Then, I had them apply a satin clear coat to finish on one of the sample pieces. It is clear, no color, except for some reason it changed the entire look of stain. How do I prevent this?!? oak sample on left: stain only. Oak sample on right: 1 coat stain 1 coat clear satin lacquer

Lacquer is not the correct finish. Research clear water born floor finishes.

The one with the clear coat looks a bit muddy, was the stain perfectly dry when the clear coat was applied?

hummingalong, muddy is a perfect description. i'm so stressed about it! the stain was dry -- well, is 24+ hours between applied stain and clear coat enough?

PPF: thanks so much for your input. I need to get the exact clear satin info from sherwin williams - i believed they called it a lacquer but i can't be positive. I'll research clear water born finishes. any certain ones you prefer? hopefully that's the answer to this stressful time crunch i'm in! i really appreciate your help!

That shlould b plenty of drying time, but I'm no expert on large projects like floors. Have you shown the samples to Sherwin Williams and asked them?

Hummingalong, yes. They created the custom stain. The gentleman yesterday couldn't tell me why the clear satin coat changed the look. Going back today to get an answer and request what PPF suggested.

Most finishes, whether poly, varnish or lacquer, will add a yellowish tone, which is what this looks like. I think "Varathane" is the only finish which stays clear, and does not add yellow tones.
