You're going to have to decide how you want to parse the living and entry space. For example, you could:

1) use the niche for your entry, putting a bench there and baskets for shoes, but that means you need to keep the walkway from door to niche free and out of the living room/rug space, which could cramp your options

2) put a couch with its back to the doorway, creating a "hallway" behind it. Then the natural solution for an entry has to be on the wall with the nice wood furniture piece, maybe relocating that. For example, you could put a narrow bench or stool for removing shoes, and/or a shoe rack or cabinet.

(not so many great midcentury options here, so you might lean stool and basket or somesuch.)

You'll probably need either a coat rack or a few hooks for jackets to go with this.

Depending on placement of the other components, you might then put a chair in the niche, or it might be where an end table falls, or it could be its own thing with a window seat or reading chair. Or maybe your nice wood piece moves there to provide some storage and hold a lamp. I would do absolutely everything else first and then decide.

Like someone mentioned, we would need pictures of the room at different angles to help guide you. with that said, I am attaching a picture of a clients house that I did their ceilings, kitchen, doors, and furnishings for their mid century home too so you could see furniture placement. In this picture, I was still no complete area rug missing. So don't judge me.:(

Thanks everyone. Here are more photos showing the whole space. The pocket door to the right of my sideboard leads to a laundry room that passes through to the garage. I have plans to convert that laundry area into a powder room. We will replace that pocket door with two regular doors (one to powder room, one to garage). I would like to know what you suggest for a living room furniture layout and how I can create a minimal clutter entryway. Thanks in advance!!

I'm not a pro, but I have a suggestion. Given your love of midcentury modern, would a 72" Nelson bench work beside your entrance? It's an iconic piece.

Yes, a bench would be handy there & not block the window. In addition to the above suggestion, another possibility would be Room & Board's Berkeley bench. Come in different finishes, has storage drawers ( since I hate the sight of shoes visible in the entry area) & padded seat. Contemporary. Other choices available too.

Could you put a small couch facing fireplace, maybe room to keep chairs, leaving walk through behind couch, maybe small table and chair in niche like small desk station perhaps

Is the rug an 8 x 10? If so, I would move it under the dining table. It is too large for the living room space and gives a false impression of what can or can not go there. Buy an odd shaped rug to replace it…like an animal skin look.

Is there room for the credenza at either end of the dining room table…I wouldn’t mind if it separated the dining space from the living space.

That would give you an entire wall for an IKEA Pax storage system.

Fireplace area…four chairs and round coffee table?

Below are just a few ideas from a design we did. Note in the first picture, the table with artwork and rug. Then in the second the four chairs around a coffee table. That could work well near your fireplace. Perhaps something like in the third photo if you doing like the other set up? Have a sofa or sectional facing the fireplace with a chair in the corner?
