Palmbob - You don't mention how large the plant was, but looking at the shape, foliage colour and flowers, I would say the plant is one of the Guzmania sanguineas.

Based on the colours alone I would say it's either the basic Guz. sanguinea if its a medium sized plant and if it a smaller sized plant it's probably Guzmania sanguinea variety brevipedicellata.

Apart from the basic Guzmania sanguinea there are two varieties of the species shown as well; variety comosa and variety brevipedicellata.
