New House base electrical plan

9 years ago

We have base electrical plans and I wanted to get everyone's opinion on what we wanted to do. We plan on adding 6-8 recessed lights in the family room (its 19X17), one over the kitchen sink, 2 pendant s over the island, and have them all over the first floor hallway.

The builder offers 4" and 5" lights, with the 4" being a bit more money. Can the bulbs in these fixture be replaced with LED lights in the future? And in the diagram below where would be be suited having 2 way and 3 way switches?

    How high are the ceilings? We put in 4" lights where the ceiling is 8' and 5" for areas where it is higher. Why can't you just put in the LED retrofit kits right away, instead of changing them out later?

    We have 9' ceilings on both floors.

    We put in recessed can lights in our current house. We had 10 installed for a cost of $1,200 parts and labor or $120 each. Those fixtures have never had anything but LED bulbs in them.

    This year we remodeled a condo and found some ceiling mounted, low profile, LED lights at Home Depot. They come as a 2-pack for $30. Although they bulge out about 3/4-inch, the appearance is like a can mounted light. They install onto a normal 4-inch electrical box rather than the deep can fixtures. We installed them on existing boxes in the ceiling, so they were basically $15 each. They are perfect for what we wanted and provide plenty of light. They would be excellent in a closet, too.

    Where's the light coming from in the kitchen? Just the pendants over island and the one recessed light over sink? It's a little hard to tell dimensions from your floor plan, but I'd probably do 8 or so recessed lights in the kitchen -- 3 centered over the aisle between island and sink, 3 over aisle between island and fridge, then 1 or 2 more over the aisle between island and stove. I'd also put in LED under cabinet lighting.

    It's really impossible for anyone to take the time to analyze and critique your power and signal plan. That would take hours and require a detailed knowledge of your design and how you prefer to live.

    As for lighting, I've said this before and I'll say it again: a creative and responsive lighting plan blends together three types of lighting--ambient, task and feature or accent lighting. In many public spaces a combination of two or all three of these types is the ideal solution.

    That said, to analyze your lighting needs requires a good sense of your furnishing plan, and your living preferences.

    If you are really unsure about this, you need an experienced architect, interior designer or lighting engineer.

    Good luck!

    @Matt E.

    There are 4 standard recessed lights in the kitchen. Were were going to add 4 more and your placement suggestion looks great. Here is a closer look:
