Is the natural Wood stainable or paintable or is it already sealed?

Certain individuals may be more or less sensitive to light odors emanating from newly manufactured products. If someone who is sensitive to what may be a slight smell present when newly opened and assembled, after an airing out for a brief period would diminish the odor.
