Hair coloring help

I am in my seventies and have completely white hair. I have had this since my fifties. I am fairly active and have just lost a significant amount of weight. I am trying to lose more but am at a standstill and need some thing positive in my life right now. I am thinking of putting highlights and lowlights in my hair but am nervous to try this. I have a few ,very few strands of dark hair so my hairdresser suggested maybe some dark highlights and then some medium blond.

i cannot find any photos of people who started with all white and then did this. Anyone here have any or have tried this. The main reason I think is that I need something right now to feel better about self and therefore continue on this journey of healthy eating that I have been on for two years now.

any advice....

I have never done this. However I have seen lowlights applied to a head of white hair and it was really a stunning choice for that person. I don't know about blond highlights, though. That seems wrong to me. Blond is yellowy and I thought the nice thing with white hair was when it was bright and sparkly, which I think the lowlights help achieve. Having said that- I know nothing about hair color. Just thinking out loud about the blond thing.

One thing I would suggest is going to a colorist and not a hairdresser. At my salon colorists have much more training than hairdressers. You would not have to stay with the colorist. Just get the right start and then your hairdresser could follow along. Of course, maybe you already have a dedicated colorist!

Losing weight as we age is such a chore and you've done it! Congratulations. DOn't be too hard on yourself as you hit this plateau. Really focus on what you have accomplished. What we pay attention to grows.

Hi Lyban, feel good, there are lots of easy styles out there. This was just a quick search as I do not know your coloring and am not a hair color expect.

I think silver hair is so beautiful. I would agree not to make it yellow or brown. If you google silver or gray hair with lowlights and look at images maybe you will see a look that appeals to you.

I saw some really beautiful silver and white haired women when on vacation and people watching. My favorites where very simple styles like a center or side part and either shoulder length or long and casually pulled back at the nap of the neck.

White is a lovely base for going pink/purple (or whatever color floats your boat). Most vivid colors are only semi-permanent and will wash out in a month or so.

I was going to say, depending on how fun you feel my mother-in-law often puts in a streak of pink, purple or some other colour depending on her cause of the day. Love the photos of lowlights as well!!!

Justterrilynn, Thank you for all the photos, the only problem with them is I dont know if any of the ones I like have all white hair underneath. I like Katie Couric the best but I think she must be more brown than white.

Robo and cawaps, LOL I am not brave enough for the pink and purple. I would like something that looks natural but if I go along with the dark I do not want to look like a skunk. Their is a touch of dark that you can see in my photo. My hair is now quite short so I was thinking that if it is horrible I could just wait a few months and it will be cut off. I always wnted that Couric look of Blond and brown streaks but I think with my base it will not work.

My hair is all white except at the nape of my neck. I won't do highlights or low lights because I don't want to go back to devoting time to haircoloring and worrying about scheduling all that around more fun activities. I do, however, kinda like the idea of a streak of playful color like robo's MIL once in a while. My streak would be a corkscrew in my head of curls though. That sounds like fun!

Lyban - that's a beautiful head of hair.

I googled low lights for all white hair and I think it looks very doable, and I think with the right hair colourist doing foils you won't notice a very streaky effect. The nice thing about low lights, too, is that they're done under your top layer of hair so you get a few extra weeks of growing them out before it's obvious.

I don't have a picture to show you, but my 85-year-old aunt has beautiful white hair. She added low lights and I swear she looked twenty years younger. She didn't add any blonde. She originally had dark brown hair, so maybe skin color makes a difference to which kinds of colors to add to your hair.

I have a 60-year-old friend who has mixed grey and white hair. She went lavender all over and frankly, I think it looks stupid, like a joke about blue-haired older ladies, but maybe I'm too conservative.

I want Lyn Slater's (the Accidental Icon) hair.

I think it's pretty easy to find pics of darker hair highlighted as it turns gray...it's much more difficult to find examples of truly gray or white hair lowlighted. Blonde may have been mentioned to give you a more natural, not too dark, not too high contrast look.

Here is one pic of a head of fully gray hair, low lighted and maybe some highlights, too:

    Here is another:
You just want to avoid having it look like this, which is much to skunky for my taste (some blonde highlights would solve that problem here):

Again, thank you so much for the photos and replies. So here are two photos I like that robo posted. With my photo of hair does anyone think I can achieve either of these looks. And what two colors do you think are in each hair picture.

i think one has silver and light black while the other is cream and brown. What do you all think?

    Those are really nice Layban!

The one big difference I see is that all of your examples are bobs, with the hair very long from the part, and layers and layers of hair that becomes a compound color. Your hair is not cut that way and much more of your scalp area will not be covered by long hair. You will have a very different result, unless you plan on growing the length of the top hair, too. The advantage will be if you don't care for it, with shorter hair like yours it will grow out more quickly.

The examples that Robo, then you posted are gorgeous. edited for clarification

Olychick, you have a very good point. I wore my hair in that bob for many years but just cut it recently to make styling much easier on me. I go away in the winter months for 4 months and their is a lot of pool time and I was tired of my hair always hanging. It is perfectly straight and only looked good right after washing and blow Drying. This cut is so much easier but like you say will not be as nice to show the colors. Oh well, I can't have everything. I am still on the fence but am leaning towards giving it a try.

I agree with oly that the photos you posted are going to look very different on your shorter hair. I would do two colors but only two levels lighter than what you have. It will give it some nice tonal dimension. I think you have to be very careful about adding dark to hair that light or it can go skunky fast. I think some of those above photos look that way. I'd also personally skip the bright colors. I don't care for it on anyone. Reminds me of the 90s when everyone I know was using kool aide to color their hair. Ymmv.

    Congratulatons on the weight loss!!

And if you're in the pool a lot and don't want to wear a bathing cap, that is another consideration regarding color.

Your hair is beautiful as is, but I know the longing for change. :-)

All the best examples are of quite thick heads of hair, too.

I think that you need a very talented hair colorist to pull off some of those looks.

Others look gray/white and wouldn't be different in look from what you have.

The main difference is the haircuts. They look high fashion.

Why not try a single process in a light brown/blond color family?

I think you should let your hair grow so that you can have more options for a cut.

Gray can look really nice, but here is the how my colorist puts it, "Women with gray hair can look nice, but they look older." So, I understand your need for this change.

I never realized that some of the great gray or white hair I see is because it's still being colored. You learn something new every day.

I also notice all the examples above are smooth and sleek. I guess curly gray or white just ends up looking like Mrs. Claus or an old Hippie. That's my future.

Lyban, your hair is beautiful! What is your original adult hair color?

Or...how about a slightly shorter, funky cut?

I have an adorable petite friend who is all grey and has a short stylish cut. We recently had a college reunion and took a group photo. When we shared the picture, I was shocked to notice that she looked much older than everyone else.

I guess my take away from that is that all grey can look great but you still look older.

Lyban-I'm with Sueb, short and funky would be great with your hair. As for the hair color, I'm sure it can be done but with a very good hair colorist and upkeep will be very often. I won't be as lucky to have your color of hair. Mine has always been naturally ugly dish-wash blonde and I spend bucks on getting and keeping the Bright blonde highlights and lowlights and now root coloring added to it to get the color I want.

sheesh asked what my original coloring was. OK, here I am at 21, then at 34 then 74. My mother went white very early like me. During my thirties it was very fashionable to have salt and pepper hair done by streaks. Most people thought that mine was streaked on purpose but it was natural. Around the age of 40 I started to dye my hair until the age of 50 then I let it go naturally white.

Now I am for some reason needing a lift. This is at age 21

    This is at age 34

    This is a tage 73

Your hair is such a pretty colour. Maybe new make-up instead? I understand that as we age our skin also changes tone so maybe that could be the change that gives you a lift.

Thanks for the pics, lyban.I agree with blfenton! Your hair is a beautiful silver, great style. Go to a makeup counter, see what they recommend. My hair went from nearly black to pewter. The makeup people changed a few things for me a few years a ago when I was feeling like you do, looking for a change. Made all the difference. I wear very little makeup, but what I do wear really counts now. Worth a try.
