I watered a bit this morning too.

Tomorrow--Monday--is supposed to be very hot. You can protect selected plants by covering them with a light cloth during the worst of the heat. Potted plants can be covered or moved to shadier locations. You can also position folding chairs, cardboard chunks, etc. against plants you think might burn. I put up my patio umbrellas. Potted aeoniums have survived the summer but I'll cover them tomorrow as it will be too much.

Now near 100F is predicted for the LA basin all this week. The plant buying budget is going to the electricity bill this month. :(

Shadecloths or anything to provide shade, ice, water. And staying inside. It's too damn hot.

I agree Socks! My mom lives in Rockport. Probably lost everything. She did evacuate and is safe.

Water early or late in the day. And MULCH. I bought some and it makes a huge difference and help. Enough water and with mulch and the plants will enjoy the heat, not be hurt by it.

Stan I have to disagree when it comes to inland heat... but agree with you about the heat of Hayward and other areas closer to the coast/bay.

It was 106 here yesterday and 105 today. Nothing enjoys that. Water and mulch can help, but the plants still don't enjoy it.

Goblue--sorry to hear about your mother. Many people have "lost everything." When you are rescued in a canoe, you cannot take much luggage and feel just lucky to be saved. I'm glad people are getting to take their pets. I donated to American Red Cross through Amazon who is matching donations.

I water at night and try to stay vigilant for signs of stress. For years I have hidden jugs of water behind plants and used them when I am to hurried to drag the hose. It is mostly for plants that are not established so I am finally needing them less.

92 in my part of the bay area. Whats fantastic? over 100 is predicted for Friday with a LOW of 72. That would be the warmest low ever recorded here. 70's as a low close to the bay..is just not done-lol.

Forecast 111 for my area tomorrow. I'll be up for a few more hours trying to water thoroughly.

Ugh heat. My plumeria just got hammered with spider mites and it isn't cooling down enough to spray at night. I just fogged with DE and am hoping for cooler weather.

The heat just arrived today. My irrigation runs on Monday and Thursday, but I think that I may supplement this weekend

When I got home from walking the dogs this morning I couldn't decide whether I should ice down my knee or just put the ice back on my head to ice down my brain and that was before it really got hot.

San Francisco is 101f. A record for September. Hayville is 104 or 103 depending on the weather site. HOT as 104 is the hottest temp ever recorded here.

I can get by on the front yard on 2x watering a week..but not in this heat.

San Francisco just set an all time record hot day of 106F. I was here to live it!

Down at Huntington Beach the air was very warm still at 8:30 pm. No helpful cool ocean breeze. Chapman University students at the international street fair in Orange walking about scantily clad at dusk. Beer is running down the gutters! We had a good time Greek dancing to live music. Back at home it's still hot outside. I heard it was this high pressure out here that stalled Harvey over Texas.

whew- we started today at 72 and hit 80 by right now,8:30am.

Nil- Plumeria should be hosed down with water every now and then. I notice that will keep the mites at bay. Some plants need in summer something to remove the grime. Mango and even Ficus like that too.

i am in San Francisco and 106 with no air conditioner is awful. can't find a store that has one in stock. gave one away two years ago did not think I needed it in SF.

Today at maybe 107f in my yard and then People in SF hiding from the sun. How rare is that?

I look the little one and a friend to a favorite beach today in Malibu - a 15 minute drive from our house - to cool down.

It was 88 at Malibu Lagoon beach, 88. If you live in LA, you understand how utterly insane that is. Usually, I go early and it's in the high 60s or low 70s .. the sun breaks out at noon just as we are leaving. Today, it was sunny from the get go, hot and still.. nasty.

The final score? 108 in Hayward and that's so unlike this city on the bay,I couldn't tell you the shock of it. The lows of 74 two mornings in a row is a record I'm sure of that. It also is in range of our average high for the date-77f.

With the Pacific Ocean and 55f water and the bay not much warmer..still hot.

Today 90's and muggy...humid. Hazy sky's. So different.

Brutal heat for days, a half an hour ago it started raining and it's now 15 degrees cooler but still really muggy here as well.

Stanofh, 108 in Hayward seems unbelievable but I do believe you. It seems not that long ago we were discussing how people who live inland cope with the heat. Now you're experiencing it. I sure hope it is a weather fluke for your area.

Not just the days Emmarene. The last 4-5 days of very warm nights/mornings is also new. One or two in a row in September isn't rare. Double that? very rare to where I don't think I lived through that in my life.

My plants came through fine. I didn't. The LOW some nights was in the mid 80s. That never ever happens here! I gave up and put an ice pack on my stomachand slept better. We retreated to the public library in late afternoon every day, a huge help. My St Augustine lawn is happy as can be, the month old lambs ear cuttings the dogs keep trampling didn't blink an eye and the couple month old planting of potted Echeveria that's in fun sun that I keep forgetting to water didn't suffer either. A canna stem fell over a couple days ago but doubt that is heat related.

106° in SF is pretty unbelievable. Therecord for Venice is 104° from 1963, and it never got anywhere near that when I lived there for 15 years. I lived in SF for 12 years, and when it got above 90 I thought it was horrible - I never had A/C there. I did have a wall unit in Venice for the last five years I was there. I have central A/C now, although I did not when I first moved to Westchester, and I'm very glad now that I do. It's gotten hotter the past 3 years that I've been here. In this last heat wave, the A/C would only cool the house to 76° - I have it set to 74°, which I prefer, but I can live with 76°. It got to 97° on Sept 3 here (three days ago), and that is a new record.
