It's pretty! I'd want to give them a try if I came across cannas with such pretty leaves. I also don't know how to spot any bad canna viruses, though. .....So you're planting outside, cutting down in fall, and covering with leaves? I guess the leaves didn't blow away before snow came? I'm planning on overwintering mine in their pots in the basement, but I never know how it will turn out until next spring.

I filled big garbage bags with oak leaves ( strong..don't break down as fast as most)..then laid the bags on the ground side by side..then stacked a second layer of bags..then a long branch on top to keep them in place..it kept the ground dry and insulated..in spring the clean up was a breeze!..

As far as I know, the Phasion, Durban etc. are difficult to decide for sure, if they're infected.

Here in Denmark, Scandinavia, we grow cannas, but overwinter in the house /basement.

And the canna virus is indeed a problem here.

Peter..I read about viruses a few weeks ago after this post..very discouraging reading..the cannas look a little droopy..not as fresh now that fall is here..I will never have a large collection since I live in a cold climate but love the look of tropicals and wanted to try them..I expect to see a virus someday..at least I won't be shocked..what a sad situation that if you have cannas you probably have a virus..the links you posted had the same info that I've been reading..discouraging..thanks for your help..

It seems that the canna plants are growing OK in our Scandinavian climate - we just have to dig the rhizomes in November. We have the same latitude as Newfoundland, Canada.

And with a reasonably warm summer, like this year, many rhizomes multiply 6x or even 8x.

I know that some diseased plants may not show any symptoms, and they will infect more plants next year.

And I'll be prepared, and look for the symptoms, yellow dots, and later the yellow streaks.
