Full size headboard on a queen size bed

I inherited my grandmother's 1950's style bedroom set. I have a queen bed and would like to use the full size headboard. I know the queen mattress will over hang but I'd like some opinions. And, if anyone has put them together how did you retrofit them? Thank you!
