Help with lamps

last modified: 9 years ago

We moved into our new home recently. There was a flurry of settling in at first but some things, such as lamps and window coverings, got set aside for a bit. I'm now ready to do some shopping. Most other lamps in our house must go. Besides being outdated, they are pretty old and beat up. Our house is a mix of craftsman and transitional. All of our trim and doors are white. The predominant color is blue-gray. I'm including a picture of our dining room chandelier to illustrate other lighting in the house. You may need to click on pictures add Hoizz always seems to distort them.

Basically what I'm looking for is advice on style, color/material, & size, with some examples for me to run by DH before I go shopping. Feel free to Photoshop.

First, the MBR. The large window will have panels that are a light shimmery warm gray. The walls are darker than they look, in a blue gray.

The living room. We will be getting a new, smaller side table.

Dining room chandelier, to show our taste.

Thanks so much!

Bumping this. I posted on Saturday. I'm hoping people were having such a great Labor Day Weekend that they didn't see it!

I'm glad you bumped this up. I saw your thread and considered replying but, I find picking lamps similar to trying to pic art for someone else. Our tastes are so individual, the choices are too numerous and so it feels kind of overwhelming to just start posting suggestions.

What might work better is for you to find some different kinds of lamps you are drawn to, post the pics and info about them here and ask people's opinions (and maybe photoshop help) about what might look best in your home. It's very nice, btw!

now that's too expensive(for me at least), but do you like the concept?

Olychick, that makes sense. I think I was hoping people would post things and I could show DH and he'd see the wonderfulness. From the little amount of lamp shopping we've done, I'm thinking it's going to be difficult to convince him that my ideas will work. I'll try to add to this post with some pictures of lamps I like if I ever get out shopping again. It'll probably be next week.

April, thanks for the response. I was thinking a rounder base, at least in the bedroom. I'm kind of torn between white, silver, and clear/glass. I really like the bolder, solid lamps but my DH turned up his nose at the ones I showed him at Home Goods (and that's pretty much my budget range)

I really like that blue three toned one.

    ..or

    ?

tell me whether I'm completely off track, so I'll know where to look and where not to look

    also..do you like glass bases?

I just saw a Jim Hawkins Hagano blue glass lamp pop up at the bottom of the Houzz site. It's way too $$ but that's the idea. I would prefer no scene or pictures on it. I put it in my idea book Lamps but couldn't figure out how to post it here.

And I like the shape of the peacock one, just no peacock. Yes to glass.

oh sorry we were posting simultaneously..you do like glass base..ok then I think I saw something recently

(don't worry I also post all sorts of pics then go to Etsy eBay and Craigslist lol..unless it's a lampshade..lampshades are very hard to get sometimes, it's already cheaper to go with ready made..

it's rarely that I buy a new light. Especially table lamps they're easier to buy second hand..with chandeliers you need to make sure canopy fits, chain is okay, tweak here and there sometimes..table lights are very easy..I don't have them new since I figure I can get really interesting ones second hand for very cheap and be happy

of course takes time so that's a minus)

I like the lime one. I'd go there in a heartbeat but my DH pretty much banned green from our new house. I think the olive walls in our previous MBR scarred him for life. LOL. I think what I need too do is set him to online lamp shopping and then he'll see for himself what styles are out there. He tends to be pretty traditional until he's looked for awhile and then suddenly morphs into a person suggesting things that I already suggested to him and he shot down a month earlier. I'll bookmark that site. Thanks!

Housequester, I meant post pics from the internet of things that are your style, that you like, even if too expensive. There are some really savvy shoppers here who might find something very close to what you have in mind at an affordable price.
