Mudroom Layout Muddle

Help! My husband and I just bought our first house, which we are going to gut. We would like to add a mudroom without putting on an addition. We live in the Midwest and want to have a place to store coats, boots, gloves, etc. We are working with an architect, and so far, the most cost-effective option is to turn the existing reach-in closet by the back door (6’ x 2’) and make it a small walk-in closet (6’ x 5.5’). The door will be on the 6’ wall. We will still have a reach-in coat closet by the front door.

I’m not sure that the closet will be big enough to be truly useful space. What do you all think? How would you lay it out?

6' x 5'5 is useful space, but what are you planning to put in there? If you are just using it for storage of your winter apparel, I feel it is adequate. If you on the other hand, needed it for sports equipment and other things like that, it might be a bit small.

Perhaps ask your architect how he/she plans to utilize the wall space? Cabinetry? Shelves? Ask them to further the exercise by showing the storage components so you can understand if it is going to work for you. Or tell the person you're working with what you need the space for and he/she can explain how that area will be functional to you.

We’d like the “mudroom” to hold all of our coats (spring, winter and fall), plus winter stuff, boots, and a few pairs of shoes. We’ve got lots of space in the garage for sports equipment, etc. My current thought is that we’ll put in rods to hang up coats on one of the 5.5’ walls and the 6’ non-door wall, with built-in cubbies along the other 5.5’ wall. The remaining 6’ wall with the door will get a few hooks, if anything?

Our architect is going to mock up the space for us. But I am finding it much harder to picture than, say, the kitchen or a bedroom.
