Install Details

last modified: 9 years ago

The window guys came to check the Rough Openings last week. Told them that it was important to me that when the windows, siding and trim are installed, spacing between widows on the exterior shows as exactly equal:

One question for the experts here (Christian, Windows on Washington, Millworkman): What is an acceptable tolerance for margin of error? 1/2"? 1/4"?

In terms of install details, this is what we kind of decided on:

1). All Skinny windows (W1, W11, W16, W12, W25, W27) will be installed FLUSH to the INSIDE (so visually from the exterior they looked "punched in" to the building);

2). All other windows to be installed FLUSH to the OUTSIDE (for a more "modern" look??)

3). On the Skinny windows I had wanted the entire Alu frame covered by siding but was told not a good idea to go all the way up to the glass (not sure why - forgot to ask), so we are leaving 1/2" of the aluminum frame exposed (does this sound right to you?)

4). On all other windows -- it's the opposite -- I'd like to expose as much of the Alu frame as possible (because these are not true curtain walls, e.g. on W2, it's actually three separate units butted up against each other -- there is NO shared mull in between). For that reason I thought it would be weird to cover up too much of the outer perimeter. I was told the minimum overlap of siding material to window frame is 1" (does that sound right to you?)

We still have not talked about details like what materials will be used to "return" to the windows, flashing, etc.

Not sure what other considerations I may be missing but if you can provide some guidance on what I should be thinking about, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Thanks!

p.s. still waiting for the shipping report but they should be en-route from Germany as we speak!
