In current layout, the space behind sectional is dead space, and a tripping hazard. Look like it could also be blocking entrance into LR?

Ask yourself, do I want a formal living room or a more casual space for watching tv, reading, etc.? Based on your preference, you place the furniture accordingly.

I would move the sectional back & into corner with back against the wall, or place it in front of window? I would likely go with 1st idea, then put a long tufted bench in front of window, so you have a window seat. Add a different colour occasional chair in a different texture beside the sectional.

Lighting is important. At present you have a chandelier and 1 table lamp. You can keep the chandelier, put a dimmer switch in, if not one already, then you can set for atmosphere lighting. Add a floor lamp behind the sectional for reading, knitting, etc.

If piece in front of sectional is large bench, that can be used for coffee table - put large tray on top with some decor.

Add another table lamp to balance the look.

You have a flat screen TV, so you have some options - can leave as is, and face it where the seating ends up; do a wall mount; or get an armoire and place tv in it & open when using it. Some people place their flat screens over the fireplace; however this is not a look I recommend, as it competes with fireplace, which I think is a shame.

I wouldn't commit to a wall colour until you have been there a while. And in the meantime, you can play with varying colours on the couch using colourful throw pillows. See what colours make the couch "pop" and add to the room. You will then get a pretty good idea what colour you may want to paint the walls.

Art work is another great way to bring colour into a room. I use large unframed canvases to hang in client's rooms. They can be found for little expense & add a real 'wow' factor to a room. You have the large wall behind where tv is now, and the wall behind where sectional may be located.

Art is personal choice - you can select any theme or colour you prefer - and change your mind anytime. You can also choose mirrors, tapestries, family photos......

Yes Lisa. Try it. Remember nothing is carved in stone. You can move pieces around until you get the look & feel that works for you.

Want to go a bit more modern?

First, I would turn the sectional to face the fireplace directly. That will give you room for chairs by the front window with a table between.

I totally agree with groveraxle's idea of turning the sectional to directly face the fireplace, at an angle to the rest of the room. At the same time, I would have the end of it meet the wall behind it so that you don't have to have lamp cords there as a tripping hazard, as Sharon pointed out. Instead of an end table, you could then use a sofa table with a lamp or two atop it.

Then, since you'd like to add more seating, that seating can be at the window end of the room. at a right angle to the sofa, with a great view of the TV, and also allowing for good conversational flow. I would use two chairs, NOT a loveseat, for that extra seating. The chairs could be slipper chairs or just comfortable club chairs with a round table between them.

Oh my goodness! I love your idea, Carolyn! Thank you for drawing it out as well, visuals are so useful. It might take time for us to get the furniture needed, but I would want to go with this idea.

I totally concur with Sharon. Large sectionals fit best with their backs to the wall. Moving furniture around also helps you find the best arrangement-for you!

A colourful art piece on the wall just on top of the TV would be perfect. A little more play with colour, say, with furniture will see your room come alive - you don't necessarily have to change the wall colour.

If it were my choice I would replace the chandelier with a brighter coloured type say in orange or lime green canopy.

I would lose the chandelier. Wall Mount the tv above the fireplace, and make it wireless by running the HDMI cable to the receiver in a closet or low profile media tower. Directly face that fabulous sectional to the fireplace, and go ahead let it be in the middle. Add a sofa table to the back for plants or art and be a showcase of favorite collectibles.

Make the wall the tv and console is currently on, a gallery, or a console table with lamp plant and art.

I to have a corner fireplace and had struggled with placement of furniture because of open concept with doors and a wall of windows. I took advice to quit fighting the flow of the room and angle the furniture as the fireplace and so it made the room make sense. . Now I get compliments on the room; must say I still change it up sometimes. It is fun now to have so many options.

Your picture reminded me of the home we recently sold. We didn't have a fireplace (sadly) like yours so we didn't need to consider both the TV and Fireplace in the arrangement. I like to walk into a room where the furniture is open and welcoming, but it isn't always easy to do. In your living room, I'd probably angle the sofa where your TV is currently (not up against the wall though) and place your TV on the half wall at the foyer.

I was taught (and my neck concurs) that TV's should be viewed straight on... therefore, mounting the TV over the fireplace puts it a little high. I like the TV on the wall to the left of the fireplace. The furniture arrangemment then should still allow conversation and viewing of either the tv or fireplace. Just a thought...

I would mount the TV on the wall above the fireplace, then angle your sectional in the way that Carolyn's floor layout shows.

I'm a huge fan of lighting and believe some sort of light source should be in every corner of a room. Maybe try a narrow long table with candlestick-type lamps on the wall where your TV is now? Maybe a floor lamp in the opposite corner?

This is the color scheme I've opted for. While waiting on the money for extra chairs, I moved the sectional into the corner to get rid of dead space and opened up the floor. Slow progress is better than no progress at all :)
