Three seems like way too much for 55" -- I'd think more like one or two, depending on diameter. You want empty space on either end, or they get in the way.

I agree that three is too many. I have a peninsula which had its own issues due to angles. I made paper/cardboard models of the pendants I was thinking about and hung them from the ceiling to help me determine size. My contractor had already determined the precise location they were going to be installed. This worked very well. As acm stated, you need some open space or the ceiling will look cluttered.

thank you. I did hang 3 things from the ceiling and put 10" plates on the island. Trouble is I need more light. Thank you for your input.

Thank you Anne. It makes sense. The pendants I've been seeing are 60w. The fan with lights have 240w total. No light over the range either. I'm trying to make up the difference with 3 and it isn't going to work. I may need to put a recessed light over the range

It will depend on the lumens, the angle of light, and the distance to the counter. Watts have nothing to do with it.
