Back Yard In Progress
We have been working on our back yard the past few weeks. Our lot is about 15,000 square feet and the back yard is pretty flat. Our neighborhood is relatively new and so there are no mature trees (this was formerly agricultural land anyway, and there were no trees even before the developers came in).
Last year, I put in raised beds for vegetables, but I am reworking them this fall.
The first major improvement we have made is to have a new floating patio poured. We had it stamped with a stone-like pattern and we acid-stained it this past weekend. We did not pour the concrete ourselves, but we did do the staining. At some point over the next few weeks, we will build a pergola over the entire thing. The slab is 18 ft by 24 ft.

Staining in progress. We used "Vintage Umber" from Kemiko. There are other brands but we got this from a local paint store instead of trying to order it online. We wanted a lighter colour, but the tans that Kemiko have seem to turn out with too much of an orange undertone.
After finishing the first coat. We diluted the stain 3:1 (3 parts water to 1 part stain). For the second coat we mixed it 1:1.
Finished and sealed. We put on two coats of sealer (it took 2 gallons). We will probably add a third coat this coming weekend.

We made a lot of progress on the pergola this weekend, thanks to several friends and relatives.
- 8 years agoWe have finished all of the structural work. The next step will be to add the Kitchen area and we will stain it once the wood is dry enough (probably in the spring). I’ll do some landscaping this fall and finish that in the spring also. We are pleased with the results!

PRO8 years agoA small L-shape with a 32' grill like this could leave enough room on your deck, as well as offer some additional seating with bar stools. Or you could do a straight island and free up a bit more floor space.
