Can I cut down the legs on this tray table?

I need a folding table about 14" tall. The top of this table has usable dimensions. Can I remove the pivoting hardware on the legs, cut down the legs to the correct height, and install pivoting hardware farther "up" the legs? And add the cross piece.

Would it be stable? There's bound to be a problem with this idea, but I can't see it. This table is cheaper than one I would make.

If possible, I'd remove equal amounts from top and bottom of each leg. That will preserve the geometry and footprint size. Then you would not need to move the pivot hinge, too.

If the geometry stays the same (pivot in the middle), it should be more stable than the taller version.

I applaud you for looking for a way to repurpose what you already have!

Agree with removing top and bottom. Have actually done something similar when building my own TV trays, experimenting with pivot heights. Low pivot equaled less stable.
