Grass Pulling Up easily

Avid reader, first time poster.
I live in Toronto, ON, and generally take care of my lawn by using Milorganite at the specified rate, and by watering well and mowing frequently.
I mowed my lawn last Tuesday, and went on vacation for about a week. When I mowed the lawn, it was extremely healthy. When I arrived today, I noticed that part of my lawn was slightly discoloured. Upon closer investigation, I was able to literally run my fingers through that section and watch my grass come up. On adjacent healthy sections, even a firm tug does nothing to the grass.
I applied Milorganite two weeks ago to the entire lawn, but only this specific section has the issue. What's odd is that the shape is almost perfectly rectangular, which I assumed would rule out grub worms or a fertilizer issue. But nonetheless, I pulled back three sections of grass - and there were no grub worms or other pests. There were some earthworms, but not in crazy quantities either.
So, what could have caused this in a 8 day period? I'm guessing someone placed some planks or something over my grass for a few days (given the rectangular shape) but my neighbour says they didn't - and the top of the grass is still quite green.
