In a vacuum I prefer the second counter, but with that busy backsplash, I think I'd want a solid or very low-movement counter. Or is that not your backsplash?

As for the other question... why on earth did you do the backsplash before the counter?!? Do you have any leftover tile that you can use to fill the gap? Otherwise, just about all solutions will look like an afterthought. Will your new counter have a lip on the back edge like the one in the bottom photo?

The first one goes better with the warmer backsplash, but the second one is cooler and goes better with the cabinets. Honestly, it seems like you did things a little backwards here and I think both countertops are a mistake with that backsplash.

The countertops you show are not significantly different to the one you have. I would go shopping and find a solid or nearly solid. I know they are out there.

When you put in the new laminate the side wall does not need to have backsplash.

I believe the OP photoshopped the counters into the picture of his / her kitchen.

I also think the first one is a better color match - but I have a hard time making decisions when dealing with mosaic backsplash. Hopefully, the new laminate will fit when you pull out the old, but for future reference, backsplash comes last, after the counters are in:)

I would try photoshopping a plain countertop. The combos above are a little busy for my eyes, but I am not standing in your space.

Unfortunately, I was never planning on replacing the countertops. I had spray painted them and applied polyurethane, which later caused a yellowing appearance to the countertops. They actually looked really good. Now, I have to change them. As for the photoshopping, I actually took the countertops and placed them on top of the existing countertop to take the picture. I thank everyone again for their replies. They are very helpful.

If the backsplash is staying, I would find a different counter top. Neither of the surfaces you have shown work with the backsplash.

If it were me, I would remove the backsplash and pick either one of the counters you like. Then, I would finish the wallboard and forget another tile. Otherwise, find a counter top that is almost a solid color to work with your tile. Good luck.

Yes...you need a more solid countertop with that backsplash. You don't want two busy patterns fighting each other.

I agree with the above comments. A less busy countertop is needed with that busy backsplash. In our last kitchen remodel, we had a busy white washed brick backsplash and went with a very simple counter top.

A solid grey counter would be awesome.
