Bark is an excellent growing medium. It's currently one of my top 4 (or a combination thereof) most used ingredients. It's also the only organic in this list. Unfortunately, suitable bark is a bit expensive (in contrast to my other ingredients) overhere so I only use it when my container is to large and becomes to heavy to move. Bark also has the favourable property of being lightweight. Thank you for sharing!

Yes, bark is great. It retains just enough water and has excellent aeration if there's no other finer particles. Al (from the container gardening forum) designed an excellent 5:1:1 mix that consists of 5 parts fir bark, 1 part perlite, and 1 part peat, and it is great for almost everything. I use it a lot and love it.

If I could use only one ingredient as growing medium, it probably would
be pumice for my most expensive plants and fir bark for everything else.

I know in some states bark can be expensive. I'm lucky enough that I live in California where bark is abundant (it is actually a waste from lumbering). Our local nursery sells 2 cubic feet fir bark for like $9, and you can get it in coarse, fine, or mulch grade. It is even cheaper if you have a pickup and buy by yards.

If you can't find high grade fir bark locally, try ordering Repti Bark from chewy.com. They sell the 24 dry quarts bag (about 1 cu foot) for $14.5. If your order is $49 or more, shipping is free. More expensive than my local nursery bark but much higher quality. It's pre-washed and is uniform in particle size. Chewy has the lowest price of the Repti Bark brand bark as of I know. (I'm not affiliated with either Repti Bark or chewy).
