Sick Cotinus

I have a Cotinus x 'Grace' that's been in the ground two years. It was looking beautiful until a hot spell about a month ago when temps got into the low 90s for a week or so. I noticed the leaves on two branches curling under and drying out so gave it a deep watering. The soil is sandy and drains quickly so overwatering is difficult if not impossible. Nonetheless almost all the leaves have begun curling and drying out. Does anyone have any idea what might be the cause? Should I yank it out or let it go and see if it recovers next year? I'm located between Sequim and Port Angeles, close to the coast so do have issues with humidity.
