I have Podocarpus macrophyllis Maki next to my house. It's probably twenty years old. Every few years I cut a bit off the top. I don't want it to be as high as the roof. Even if I let it go it would never get giant. Because it is in the shade I don't have to water it in the summer. This year I remembered to water it and it got wider.

I also have the more Ferny Yew Pine which has grown into a big tree, but I allowed that to happen. If you are willing to shear them they can be kept as shrubs. I have not seen this blue one your neighbor has so I looked it. up. It is not columnar but it is described as a slow grower. That make me think you could keep it any shape you like.

Podocarpus are easily pruned and can be maintained at any height and shape. Just about every home has them around here (Silicon Valley) and smack dab next to the house. My maki's are over 30 years old and I keep them at 8' and 3 feet wide. The neighbor across the street has a 40 year old wall of graciliors that are about 10' tall and 4' wide. I have never seen any damage from the roots, which are finely textured. The Icee Blue variety is spectacular, and we planted 7 of them last year!

I just saw them a few weeks ago at Lowes. Very nice...no exaggeration on how icy blue they are.

They are extremely slow growers. Untouched, they will be a problem in 30 years or so. Most people don't look that far ahead. The problem may be that they will lean out away from the house in search of light, and/or will be difficult to get behind to paint the house. Slow growing or manageable or whatever, it's wise not to plant too close to structures.
