I saw his recent post with photos of his beautiful garden and commented about his bananas and elephant ears..I wish I could have met him..I'm sure he was a wonderful person and will be missed..my condolences to his family..

NO NO NO!

I have an e-mail from him less than a month ago describing how long he worked that day digging and dividing hostas for a neighbor. I asked him to please post a tutorial showing how he did it. I will treasure the hostas he sent to me. Tears flowing, this is a real shock. We are diminished.

This is shocking and extremely sad news. Bruce has always been so nice and helpful here on this forum. He recently showed us how summer rain made his gardens so beautiful and seemed to be looking to the future. Gone too soon, and his presence will be missed. My heart goes out to his family and friends.

Bruce will be missed greatly! Another chapter closes in the world of hostas. My condolences to his family and may they take comfort in knowing he touched many lives for the better.

I am shocked also. He seemed so kind and was so helpful and eager to share his knowledge on the forum. His recent postings were a pleasure to read, and I was looking forward to more. His love for his garden so apparent. He was too young to have left this world and had so much yet to give. I was touched when he showed an effort to meet with me recently. My deepest sympathy to the family.

Wasn't it only last week that we shared thoughts about hostas and elephant ears? Such a nice guy, so patient with people like me that are new to the world of hostas. I will miss him and my thoughts go out to his family and friends.

I am so saddened. Bruce was in DE recently doing consultant work. We tried to arrange a visit to my home to see Hosta Island and agreed on a day. He said it would be later in the evening. For some reason, he came to my house, toured the garden, left a gift hosta on the chair in front of my house then left without ringing my doorbell. He later emailed me to say the garden was beautiful. I am so sad that I never met him in person.

Unbelievably sad news! I thought I was seeing things when Babka wrote in the Gold Standard post, "RIP Bruce"... then I saw Stephanie's post. I am stunned.

My condolences to his family and to anyone on this forum that knew him personally. We have lost a fellow gardener and a hosta lover. He will be missed on this forum where he often shared his knowledge and expertise, not to mention photos of his amazing tiered gardens in Virginia. The brief interactions I have had with him during various postings will continue to stay with me. I also wish I had met him - I would have endeavoured to obtain a piece of his mother's famous Gold Standard hosta! Rest In Peace, Bruce Banyai.

i didn't know him but certainly appreciated his advice and knowledge. And he gave the impression of gentleness, kindness.

This is sad, seems surprising and quite sudden. I'm always very shocked when someone is taken from us so suddenly.

So sad. I met him just once when he gave a presentation on Hostas at a Hosta Society in the Detroit area. He invited me to come (on this forum) and it was all about the 'Michigan Hosta Lady" - his mom, Pauline. He seemed like a very sweet man. My condolences to his family and members on this forum who knew him.

How terribly sad! I met him at a hosta conference a few years ago. This is not what I wanted to catch up on when I logged in. My deepest sympathy to Lois and the rest of his family, and to us for such a loss to our community.

You were the first one I thought of after the news hit me - I'm sorry, Ken. It was apparent on this forum how highly you thought of Bruce. I hope you will continue sharing the great stories and memories you have of Bruce, and his mother, and of countless others who contributed so much to the world of hostas. They live on - their legacy endures...

I don't hang out here as much as I should, but Bruce Banyai is certainly a familiar name. Just last week he confirmed a Patriot sport for me. May you find green gardens and plentiful rain, Bruce.

I'm relatively new to this forum, so didn't really know Bruce. My condolences to his family and to all of you here, his gardening family.

He was so generous with his knowledge, enthusiasm, and encouragement. What a loss!

I am in shock, I was gone for a few... Back today visiting my happy place on the internet (this Hosta Forum) ...

My eyes started burning with tears and my heart dropped reading this thread.

I feel like I knew Bruce because he shared so much information and I loved all of his posts. I was hoping to one day see him in person doing a presentation/talk. I became a fan of his knowledge and kindness.

My deepest sympathies and wishes for comforting memories full of love, happiness, and peace to his family and friends.

May Bruce Banyai's legacy of love for hostas and gardening, sharing and educating others live on in memories and through actions. It will for me.

Bruce gifted me Twist of Lime on his visit to DE last month. I will always admire that plant and remember him fondly.

im pretty sure twist of lime was his mother Pauline's plant .. and bruce just registered it ... but now i have no one to ask ... though i suppose solberg would know ...

maybe donna knows????? ... since she just got the gift ...

I picked up a plant at my horticultural society's plant sale this year, and it was marked as Lemon Lime. But it's not. I think it is Twist of Lime. I was happy to have Bruce join in our conversations again recently and was meaning to ask Bruce to help identify this hosta. Hoping it turns out to be Twist of Lime which will be a reminder of Bruce and his mom.

I bought Twist of Lime in late summer because I read a little about Bruce and his mother. Plants Galore says it was Pauline's plant and had been registered by Bob Solberg, the HL says Bruce Banyai/Bob Solberg...

Now it will help me remember...
