Need help on Columns

I would like to change the color of my columns. I dislike the light green on the door trim and Columns. I'm not opposed. To changing the trim color.

Can anyone think outside the box for me.?

I feel like they need to be darker. Like the darkest things on the whole exterior. Like a much deeper version of the house body color.

Cute house. Decent paint job. Unique colors.

It's tough. I agree with Lori. Lighter would just be too stark a contrast. So darker? The color it is, is not that bad given the rest of it.

    How old is the roof?

Should I do the columns and door trim from light green to dark? Also what about the peaks on upper windows? Or anywhere else.
The roof is new , the sun hitting is hitting it where the flash caused sun spots

Maybe this is a better picture... a little too much sun. The shutters are more like the far left...dark brown stain

Thanks Lori......That's an awesome idea. I did get started on the columns

Should I just use that lighter green under the porch and paint the dormer trim the darker green as the Columns and door trim hence eliminating the light green to only under the porch?
Just not a fan of that light green on the dormers

Sure. Whenever you can edit and simplify an exterior I think that's a good thing. I love the columns - I love that color. #yum

    Are you done yet? {just kidding}

I think this is the fastest transformation ever on the Garden Web!

Got this far. What do you think? Any other pointers?

I was thinking of painting the shutters (Same dark brown) due to the fact the sun dulls the stain . Maybe a satin. The pillars are suppose to be low sheen but have a decent gloss to them.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks so much for helping

The amount of colorants needed in a can of dark color like that foresty-teal adds an extra bump of sheen, and on an exterior is really noticeable. As it cures, it won't be *as* shiny - sheen sort of calms down if that makes sense.

Wood shutters with a transparent or semi-transparent walnut-ish brown stain would be gorgeous.

Or you can just give the existing shutters a fresh coat in the same brown. I'm not sure about paint over stain - how well that will work or even if you can do it - so ask the pro's at the paint store.

What is the color you ended up with on the columns? Is it a stock color with a name and number or did you have it custom mixed. I couldn't stop thinking about it.

    Good work!

Lori, The house is HC134 Tarrytown Green and the dark trim is 2050-10 Salamander. Don't purchase these from a box store, get them from a higher end Paint store.
The richer colors at the box stores never match well on higher end product.
my shutters gave a semi-solid so going to be impossible to get a transparent or semi. will have to match with a semi.
During the day the house is very dark, i was wondering if we did a 180 and did a light color paint to make it pop.
    what would you suggest. ?
i know, this is a tough one

l love your house colors, also. Good work on the paint job! I'm surprised nobody has told you to lose the shutters, that would further improve the appeal.

I get the most compliments on the shutters, plus I made them myself so i have a vested interest lol. There made out of Clear Cedar. Cant find that in a store.

That's impressive, but I think the consensus here is that if they're not functional, they're "faux", thus undesirable. I'll go a bit further and say that the two evergreens in front of those windows are too large and blocking them. Not a good spot for them, removal would allow the paint job to shine more. Trim shrub on right, as well.

i agree on the two evergreens. They sre getting old. I actually took a pair of sheers and did a little Topiary as you see. But agree with you.

I, too, vote for the dark color on porch and dormer trim! It really is a lovely color.

I am definitely keeping my shutters but hoping there was a lighter color i could go with. Maybe Lori will pull some magic out of her hat.

I don't think I would go with a different color than brown on the shutters. If anything you could maybe try a lighter brown.

Here's why. Brown is dark orange. The palette is technically, perfectly complementary. Blue-green and red-orange. If you change the color of the shutters to a lighter, different color you blow the technically perfect complementary color scheme. Pollute it with another color. Complicate it with another color. And there's never a good reason to make an exterior color scheme complicated. For example using brick and stone together on an exterior; I don't understand why people feel the need to do that. Pick a brick lane or a stone lane and stay in that lane.

They way it is now, just two complementary hue families is simple and that's why it's so striking and fabulous. Don't over think it, don't over design it. JMHO.

Adding an extra layer of punch with flowers in a range of purples and bright greens, like potato vine green, could be very fun.

I totally agree. I got a stain to work well with the shutters in a darker brown. Thank you so much for your help. Now on to my deck. Attached a night photo from my phone. A little grainy and dark. Sorry.

It really came out fabulous and I love the bold color scheme.

should i keep the dark green on the ceiling of the porch roof or do the light green i used before as the trim? i forgot to ask

Looks a little dark on the porch. A lighter ceiling might be a good idea.

You think I should just do the light green under the porch roof only? or all the under spots on the overhangs as well?

You're probably done by now. :) But my choice would be just the porch ceiling.

lol...No just the porch ceiling. ..thanks again...

Lori, I wanted to spray paint my fountain. Is there some colors you could suggest. There are 3 urns attached to each other. Not the best picture though. no updates on house working on side and back.
