My sons' room needs help!

My sons, 9 and nearly 14, share a room and it's terribly disorganized because I'm not sure how to use the space.

In the bedroom, they want their bunks, the weight bench, a hammock, and possibly a little reading fort.

They currently share the dresser, which isn't large enough for them. I'd like to remove that piece and design their closet with shelves and drawers that could hold their clothes. As it stands, the closet is a wasteland.

I'd also like a way to hide or screen the weight bench. There is no other room for it and it does get used.

The boys were both born in Arizona and think it would be fun to have a desert theme. Their bedding is new, with white and grey, and touches of blue and greenish yellow. I want to work around those colors.

Could you help me with furniture set-up, a way to hang a hammock, minimizing the look of the weight bench, and closet organization?

If there's no divider between the closets, you could handle that however you want -- for example, you could attach rods to the side of the (built-in) cabinetry, or you could frame a wall there in order to use it as an isolated closet.

A real budget solution is to just move the dresser into one of the closets and build more shelves and hangers around it, at least until you have more funds for an ambitious project. Then just fancy up the other one with the pricier stuff.

Ah, photos helpful! :)

The only way to screen the weight equipment would be to put it along the big wall where the dressers are, with a curtain or folding screen blocking it from view. (Or you could switch the bunk beds to that wall and screen corner. Don't want to block window.)

Then I like your idea of reworking the closet(s) with drawer and hanging storage -- lean toward the former, as they're unlikely to have much hanging stuff at any point soon -- you could give each a section of double rod with pants hangers, etc., for their dress clothes, or even have them share a rod zone on one side. In fact, you migth consider setting up one closet as a mix of shelves (for sweaters and other large things) and double rods (and a few shelves for shoes) and then take the doors off the other closet and basically turn it into full-height dresser-equivalent storage (with open shelves up high) -- you could do that with either closet hardware or by having actual cabinetry built in.

This could even include a section of bookcase, etc., to make it a replacement for all kinds of furniture, allowing you to, say, put a bunch of cushions and beanbags down for a reading area under the windows, or maybe hang a hammock from bunk to wall in that space. (A hanging swing chair might be a better bet.)

Thank you acm! I love the closet photos you shared, especially the wall of white built ins with the blue wall. This is what I would do if I had the money. But your thought of doing one side with hanging bars and some shelves, and the other side with built ins is one I hadn't considered. Would I have to demo the side wall so we could access the whole closet space, or would the built ins just go into the opening, leaving the side area behind the wall empty?

Something to think about - this is their room and they use the weight bench. There may not be a need to hide it. They like it!

I love that there are two closets. Absolutely do a closet organizer in each. Shelves are easier to keep up than drawers.

I'd give each boy a bulletin board for the medals and other keepsakes.

For the hammock - only one? Looks like you could have two - head corner hanging in the corner by the dresser - then each foot hanging on a separate wall - one where the dresser is now and one on the other wall.

I think I would be better to have a boys theme for there room,And also i think its much better to ask them to suggest more since they are the one who will use the room.
