Whatever do I have here!?

Had been working on photo updates in the catalog when I came across this plant. I would describe the flowers as single stars.

But a strange this has happened to one bloom...

(Looks like a flower growing within a flower!)

Here's what the rest look like (and very large flower too if you can't tell)

I can only surmise that my collection has been invaded by mutants???

Aha - I second DB. If there is a potential to have semidouble blossoms - and the plant is in a prime condition - and it is - it will try to put more petals. Extra petals are modified parts of the flower - anthers in this case - structures that carry pollen sacks - not all double flowers have pollen, some of them modified all their anthers into extra petals.

I think what happened - a plant modified 1 anther into extra petals- and didn't do anything with the rest of them - so you have this fountain of small extra petals where the anther should be.

That makes perfect sense to me, Irina. I did think it was unusual that the anthers appear on the side of the new petals, and not in the center of them.
