Any suggestions for a rug?

The painting and drapes can go as well.

We all have had to deal with small spaces, as well as being stuck with old furniture for a while. Old furniture is good with little kids. I would first select a rug which is almost as large as the room. The little kids will be playing on it, so it should be good on the knees. A multi-color rug (not a stripe) would be my choice, maybe a Persian style, especially if the pattern suggests roads for little cars. I'd add two upholstered chairs in a fabric which has been Scotchguarded for cleanability and has one of the medium tones of the rug. Then I would choose a wall color which picks up a lighter color from the rug. I would keep the tv over the cabinet, but move the art to another location and add a bit more art. You may need a couple of small side tables, but skip the coffee table unless you find something small and narrow enough that it doesn't block the traffic pattern. Sheer curtains would allow light in and give minimal privacy (unless your windows face the neighbor's windows, in which case I would add light-filtering window shades.

I really want to get rid of the rug. I've had it for some time.

I love Maureen suggestions! question - are people going to be sitting on the sofa while watching TV or is tv watching just for the kids sitting on the floor? I'm wondering if you want to angle that TV in the corner. also what is the wall to the left of the sofa? is that a large entryway? just wondering about that corner of the room...

You can use day beds or benches to provide extra seating. Since they don`t have any visual obstruction they are a great way to add seating to a room. thanks for the photos. would you be open to sliding the TV to the right at an angle in that corner? or placing the TV against the wall near the dining room entry? that way there would be better TV viewing and you could put a larger beautiful piece of artwork on that back wall!

Have you tried your couch facing the tv...it may still allow for traffic flow. Add a console behind the couch and add a lamp, as that's needed in the room. Place a chair on either side of tv for your extra seating, Under the window you could add a bench for even more seating. Just a thought.

also do you want to replace that rug or just get rid of it and have carpet only?

Maureen, I tried moving the couch before but felt it was unsafe because it seems like it can tip easily when the boys are jumping on it

I do move the tv that would mean at an angle, I think the entertainment center would have to go as well as it's too long to be angled. :/ but it is a thought

Is the couch saver where it is, with the window behind? Perhaps a heavy console table could help it from tipping? Reclaiming wood is sturdy and if it has a second shelf, a good storage solution with baskets.

what about placing the TV where the art easel is? it looks like there's enough room to keep your media cabinet there.

I would not put a rug there so maybe someone else can chime in in a rug suggestion. I would use that budget for wall art for little Ottomans or poufs for extra seating!

I like your room! It is next to the kitchen so you and the kiddos can be together without being under your feet, etc.

Try the TV on the short wall to the right of where it is now and put it on an articulating arm...if the wires are too short have the cable company come out and rewire. Then add add an articulating arm to get the TV off the console where it is tipable and hang it just a smidge above the console which is now on the wall under it.

IKEA has these really great chairs I think called Pongo chairs...they have been around for years and are really durable and economical....if no IKEA near by try Craigs list....they wear like iron! Or possibly you can order them online at IKEA?

I think a nice broadloom patterned rug cut to fit the room but one foot smaller all around would work. And you would need to have it bound but if you found a remnant the price could be a real savings!

The room color could be Sea Salt by Sherwin Williams which is one of the most recommended wall colors on Houzz.

I would try a pair of the Pongo chairs on either corner of the sofa for extra seating.

Add a pair of cube benches in a blue print, pull in pillows and curtains in more of the blue that you think works with the sea salt and brown colors in the room.

Lastly a tall shallow cabinet on the wall closest to the kitchen are or a tall dresser for storage of games etc used by the family in this room.....also large baskets on wall where TV is now for toy storage.

I would get rid of the TV stand and mount the TV on the corner between the two walls so that the guests sitting on the couch can actually watch TV and not have to turn their heads.

Considering that the couch is a bit too big, I would turn his room into a cozy room and add another couch or long sofa where the TV stand is to allow for more guests.

I would remove the rug altogether and put a low table so that guests can can put their tea, coffee or fruits. I would also add a big mirror in place of the painting and put the painting in another room. Big mirrors give the illusion of space.
