In the same space and with the same effort you could have a Cara Cara. Washington navel orange is available in local markets almost worldwide; while the CC is just becoming available in specialty niche markets.

John, I whole heartily agree with you. I already have a CC. I have no idea what variety I got. Record Buck label just says "Navel Orange", so who knows what the hell I got. I really dislike Record Buck and will never intentionally buy from them.

Well put John. i have seen cara cara 2 times here in Cincinnati around a dollar a pound. For me it is kumquats and sweet NZL I'll grow.

Speaking of navel oranges, guys, is it true that the bigger the navel, the sweeter the fruit? Heard it from someone:) we have navel oranges from South Africa in store and the navel out side the fruit is like a dot, the taste is not that sweet.

Vladimir, and it spreads over the internet! I just googled cocktail grapefruit after reading Laura's post, and I think I need one! I mean, everyone has to have one grapefruit, right?

(Also, I had a navel in my old house, gave the sweetest fruits ever, and my friends bought juicers counting on its bounty! The tree was over 40 years old, and I never fed it once, because I didn't know you had to! My favorite tree ever! And awww, the day my husband buys me a citrus, I will celebrate!)

thanks, KC, I was trying to resist grapefruits, but you are right. I think if you are growing citrus you really do need one. At least.

Vlad, aren't you going to use the no space argument to get a few of them back into the house?

I already have used the "no space in the greenhouse" argument and my enabler is letting me bring some back into the house. I think both of us would have missed the forest ambience in the living room.

Lol guys. Vladimir, I agree. I like my indoor jungle for a few months. I am just worried about whiteflies...paranoid actually. I am seeing them on the new growth of my trees and have been spraying.

Laura, I used to have terrible white fly problems with the hibiscus plants but have not seen any on any plant since I started using imidacloprid (about 2 weeks before I bring them indoors) on all my non-citrus indoor plants.

The problem with that solution is that all my trees except for the guava and now olive, are all citrus. I can't use that stuff. I've been spraying with a mix of ho and neem, but they come back - only on the new growth.

You might try those yellow sticky traps not so much to keep the white flies under control but to help monitor the presence of white flies. Then you can take immediate action if you see any on the traps.

Thanks Vladimir. I may use that indoors. I sprayed again tonight bc a few of the ones that are flushing have lots of them. They seem to be getting worse...could it be the time of year? I know I will not eliminate them, but I can control them. I noticed last winter that they only affected new growth and that's all they're bothering now. If I can minimize how much they grow over winter, it should help, but that's hard to do. I just don't want to hurt the new growth with all the oils.

Oh what a nightmare Laura. At the moment I don't see anything here but will start spraying top to bottom next week and when the couple of rounds is done, will all bring them in and hope for the best. I will use DE on top of the soil to keep any crawler down. Hope that will help

So are whiteflies very seasonal? I had a cloud of them a few weeks ago, and sprayed maybe twice with oil (and peppermint soap, that disastrous time) and they haven't been back! However, I do have a severe case of CLM that i need to treat. I'll start a new thread with an update, I guess.
